How to clean the Mass Air Flow sensor

Caution:This Tutorial is just for reference, i am not responsible for any injury,harm or damage that cause by your mistake.............

After you driving your car every day, your MAF sensor will get dirty, this affect the car to collect the correct data, here is what we do to fix it.

Here is what you need:
A Wrench
socket
grove<---if you want,i didn't
A brain (for common sense)
Maf sensor cleaner
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Caution: don't use other cleaner, make sure the one you use is for MAF sensor, if not, you will damage the sensor and it cost 260 bucks to replace it.

This is what i use
CRC MAF sensor cleaner. get it from Autozone, it is around $8............

First unplug the connector,loose the clips that holding the Air filter box, the bolt which holding the wire and the one connect the hose and the sensor.....

now you can take the whole thing off

This is the sensor, spray the cleaner inside the sensor 3-4 seconds and let it dry.

Follow those steps you just do to put it back and go take a drive, you should feel the different, at least i do.

how about one for cleaning your throttle body?

I tried it and it worked.

I have to try that.. We sell that at R&S

where do you spray it exactly? just everywhere inside? or certain spot?

I'm really curious wtf is inside that can that doesn't destroy the sensor and somehow makes it ''cleaner''.

I bet if you spray that in the throttle body with the engine running it will be exciting. (note the EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE warning on the bottom of the can)

Throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush is the only way to do it right.

The only portion of the MAF that makes any difference is the suspended diode in the center of the MAF tube. The rest is just a container to hold the diode.

It's a mild petroleum based solvent that doesn't destroy plastic...

mine's f!@&#37; up right now... need a new maf..

Tried it out today, worked great! Now to install a short ram intake

...lol i didnt use that stuff if you read the label it specifically says not for use on toyota turbo mafs, most lexus mafs and all mitsu mafs XD. not sure why but apparently its not good for it.

Because most Mitsu's use a Karman Vortex air flow meter,not a heated wire type.

10. DO NOT use on vehicles with a Karman-Vortex air flow sensor, e.g. Toyota Supra Turbos, Mitsubishi’s and most Lexus vehicles.

I clean my MAF every time I clean my filter. I use QD Electronic Cleaner the CRC electrical parts cleaner made for wire connectors and the like. Then after that dries I spray the residue off with a can of the compressed air the keyboard cleaning stuff. The QD Electronic Cleaner is delicate enough for Karman-Vortex sensors. I used to work at an auto part store and this was the suggestion by our Senior Tech when I went up to him showing that I cant use MAF cleaner on my car.

The QD electronic cleaner is very similar, but less concentrated I believe. The propellants are different as well.

When i got my self a new (used) MAF i used CRC electronic cleaner onnit before installing :)
On the throttle body u can use brake fluid to clean aswell. Be carefull so u dont get any fluids into the manifold.

I just used the electric parts cleaner 20 min ago and it has not had a effect on it, just cleaner, the MAF is still good

there ya go did you just clean the diode or the whole MAF? I dont mind cleaning the whole thing and then spraying the whole thing with the air cans to make sure there is nothing left when the car is started.

Interesting reading-how the Karman Vortex airflow meter works.

I soaked the whole thing with it and let it air dry, while i cleaned the iac and tb, and did some other bs work to the car.

here is what the CRC cleaner looks like, running for 3 weeks now no problems.
remove
spray/soak
let dry
install
reset ecu works wonders

Bought a can of the CRC MAF cleaner and saw the warning on the can about not using on Mitsus, CRAP!! Funny, I researched it on the CRC website and it makes no mention of this so you don't find out until you buy it. If I had not read the label before I used it, it might have cost ne hundreds of $$$. Anyone had any problems using the CRC MAF cleaner?

It may not be the MAF anyway. I am throwing a P0174 code but there is no change in performance, idles as smooth as silk and accelerated smooth and strong. The only symptom other than the code is that my gas mileage dropped from around 23 to about 20.5. When I stomp on it there is no black smoke from the exhaust so it can't be too rich. My scantool shows MAF @ about 3.8 to 4.2 at idle and up to 40 acceleration and a speed. And it's curious how only bank 2 is lean?

Ive always used it. No problems.
