Where are you located? I have a complete 1995 2.4 motor in my garage hanging on my engine crane. I am in Montana and I'd bet you are nowhere close. With your car being a 1997 I think you should get a 1996-1998 motor. Minor variations between 1994-95 engines and later 7g engines if I remember right.
Try http://www.car-part.com/ If you list you zip code and it will sort out junk yards listing motors that will fit your car by who is closest to you. I did a quick search and found 14 pages of listings for 2.4 galant motors ranging in price from $250 to $1000. Just depends where you are located and what the JY thinks they can get you to cough up. If you have the time and space, hang on to your car and watch for a 7g that's been wrecked and grab the entire car. If you get one with a 5-speed you are ahead of the game. One that has been wrecked should be a bargin. My last three 7g cost me $200 each; 95S with a 5-speed that I parted out (that's were the spare motor comes from) had been hit in the rear, 94GS with a bad motor (replaced with one from JY and its my DD) and a 96 with a bad auto trans that is waiting for a 5-speed swap. Parts cars are out there, you just have to have space and time to find them. Heck if you were close I'd give you a couple of hundred for your car and plan to fix it.
