    She is Alive !

Well i got my ride all put together today. its crazy, and wow, so intense, anyways, when i first started her. took a little turning over to get her to fire up, but it was really off pitch and running rough, of coursse VERY loudd cause i just had the heads ported and polished. But it seems just when the computer kinda tried to adapt, ( 30 seconds ) or so, It just went CLACK ! and stoped. This was pretty loud. Definatly didnt sound internal.... Im not sure, i was so scared.

so i took my wrench and spun the crak again, a few times, and i didnt hear any grinding at all. nothing abnormal. sounded fine, Just sounded like regular compression hissing.

So i turned it over, just real fast with the key. Sounded fine,. turned over fine, Hit the key just real fast a few more times. There is no Valves hitting or anything, im almost 100 % sure buy how loud the noice was it was external.

So i decided to try to crank her over again. It fired up and ran a second then CLANk again, Didnt sound like piston slap, didnt sound very good thought. Maybe a tensioner or something ? Only thing i could think of, is i didnt have a crak puller to properly tourqe the crank sprocket. I just air ratched it. Maybe i did it to tight ? and its grabbing the Cam posisioning seonsor plate ???? Any ideas ? id appreachate it before i go takin it apart to see whats going on.

I know the timing was ok, i checked everything like 50 times, the screwdriver, all the marks, the tensioner, everything was set. I was just calling it a night for tonight, ill pull the belts off, and look at the timing side.

i guess ill start buy compression checking everything tomarrow, just to 100 % verify the problem is not in the block or the heads, cause its clean, no head noise or block noise at all, just that loud Clack, Im not starting my car again till i find out what the hell that noice was.

Well my o2 sensor plug was unplugged. Which would explain why it was running rough, I double checked all kines and everything. But im still not going to start it tonight. im off to work laters

That explains some things... a clack followed by a stopping engine is never good, though. There's really no way to overtighten the crank pulley - it sits flush against the timing cog and should be torqued to 137+ ft-lb any way (at least on the V6).

No accompanying belt squeal means it's nothing on your accessory drive. That only leaves the valvetrain drive (timing belt), internals (including oil pump), or transmission (torque converter if you're still auto. Those are the only rotating items.

hrmm, Well it was really dark out when we were finishing it, and we made sure the alternator belt was really tight, and tighted the Power steering tensioner pretty good too, so the belt has a good ammount of resistance on it, but not to much. Hrmm. Well i have heard of air drivers only bieng able to tourque down to around 60-70 foot lbs. And my friend did his lugs, and it still needed tourqued down ALOT. If this was for say. 40 or so ft lbs less than spec do you think that would mater ? There were no serious vibrations or anything. It just went, Clunk and died. and sounds good when i just turn it over. no valves slapping or anything, dont sound like there is any top end noise, like rockers, or a cam or anything like that. but i think the touqe wrench i was using from the start wasnt so accurate... I dont know how badly that would really effect anything. i dont think it would be in the oil pump, i was more or less thinking something on the lines of it bieng the Crank posistioning sensor, or a Tensioner ? cause it ran for about 30 seconds untill it Clunked... And then i checked a few things out, everything sounded good, so i fred it up again, and it died. ( with no Clunk ) Stoped checked all my oil and water levels, and everything, turned it over a few, listened real closely for any grinding or any noice at all, only noise coming from the block / head is the compression hissing, and the usal sound of a healthy cylinder rubbing. Even if i like blew a headgasket, it wouldnt clunk and stop would it ? that has to be some parts of the valvetrain. bottom line. I guess ill sleep on it, sience ive been up for
72 hours, and ill wake up and take a look at it . Any other thoughts would be greatly appreachaited. Im not turning this over again untill i find out what it is....

But even if i droped a vale, or a spring or something was sticing down, i would definatly hear piston slap ? or some kinda metal on metal engine noise right ? ( like when i hook the wrench up to the crank and turn it manualy ) For some reason, this onyl clunks, when its bieng fired up, with spark and everything, Anyone happen to have a picture they can take of there 8g for me ? and post a picture of how the coil harness goes, and all that mess... The injector plugs. Etc.... Maybe something is not right... Maybe also if ya can, take a couple pictures of behind your intake manifold, and throttle body, i would really like to get pictures of the hoses / fuel lines, and wires in this area. Also the Throttle cable. Could someone take a picture of that, i would like to double check it Thanks for anyone who can take some pictures of there 8g 2.4 l Motor !!! I would really apprachaite it. Thanks

i left the block / tranny and oil pump all connected, and left it all alone, as my tranny is great, and the factory honing marks are all good, even my front main seal feels nice and rubbery, so no need to even touch it. All i did was take the head off... Port and polish that, do my valves. and changed my water pump, and alternator, with a new timing belt, basicly top end rebuild, and replaced all the little gaskets and little crap like that.... also, My timing belt cover wont bolt on ... for some reason i can get the long bolt right in front to go together... Maybe thats why ? The bolt that goes thre your timing cover, that is right there buy your power steering pump, the one that has the bracket inbetween the timing cover and the head, that supports thoes little green triangular clippy wires. i dont think that would make this Clunk, and if so, i doublt it would stop the engine....

I dont know, im scared :( and that was my baby, i always took car of her, and i love my galant.

my spark plugs were never tourqed. Lol, I set them in there hand tight... And forgot to tigthen them, but that would cause loss of compression, not a huge Clunk and the motor stopping ? it definatly sounded metal on metal .

I doubt from just dropping my mounts and lowering my engine would effect my tranny at all... At least in a way to act like that. run fine in park then all of a sudden. clunk and stop, i just hope its nothing to serious, im kinda scared to take that timing cover off... I know im going to end up pulling the whole motor most likely, But it sounded definatly on the outside, so im more confused that ever, Well ill have it compression checked and all that, have some tests ran. i really wish it woulda just kept running, i have a bad feeling about this, i knew i shoulda not let my friend do the timing... i comeptly built the head and everything by myself, my frist time but still, it all pressure checked. ETC. So ya. im lost, its shaved and flat and everything was 100 % perfect timing, so ya, im like WTF going to kick my galants ass in a minute.

Ah, combustion gases shooting through the spark plug holes is going to sound really nasty. It's going to sound almost metallic and LOUD. Remember, it's EXPLODING inside your engine.

That would make sence, But i mean, i dont think there that loose. I mean, i barely tightned them buy hand, like, i didnt even wrench down on them ,just fit them in kinda snug. I dont think i would hear a loud ass metallic sound threw there would i ? or is it possible ?
cause it dies right after this noise, almost like a missfire. or something, but there was 2 of 6 or 7 tires it made a loud noice, once 30 second after first startup . Then it died 5 times, and then the last time i gave it a tiny bit of throttle, and it made the noice again, it sounded louder than the first time.
of course not in a row, we checked everything before... We spun the crank buy hand and yada yada, timing still lined up perfect. on when i started it like, all the way, not even turning it over with the key made that noice, only when it was Running. or tried to run

Dude, you forgot to tighten your spark plugs before turning over your engine... I can only imagine what else is wrong. Is it working now or not?

i havent tried again, i was going to pull the cover off and check everything out, it didnt sound like it would come from the plugs. But maybe im wrong, i know they need to be tightned. Well its not running after that last one, but im kinda scared to srart it again man. i have another kit, i could always tear it apart again, all i would need is a head gasket, So its not outta the question. But it dont sound liek there is any perminat damage, eveyrhing still spins free, with no grinding or any noises. Even sounds like it starts fine when i turn it over for a second . I have not tourched it sence, first think i do when i wake up is tighten the plugs. maybe try again, and if it does it again, im pulling the timing cover and see wtf is going on.

cause if i threw a valve, it wouldnt sound good when i turned it over with the key. it would grind and be knockin around in there, and be getting smashed around. if there was any other damage to the engine, i would be able to hear it buy spining the crank . or Definatly when i turned the key over, cracnkin the engine with the starter. would definatly be makiing noise

Do a compression test... don't you have a tester? You shouldn't be doing engine work unless you're fully equipped.

hehe its going on 3 days, i was making mistakes like, not tighting my spark plugs. and something else im not even going to metnion lmfao, well ok, its kinda funny, i spent my last 40 $ buying another gallon of AMS Oil, lets just say that.... lol . and had to get alot of kitty litter. So ya, then i had to go to work for 8 hours :) so ill hit it up when i wake up , at least a little snoozer .

The o-ring gasket slipped off my oil filter while I was pre-filling it and I didn't notice. Needless to say, I had a big puddle on the floor after turning on the engine. That was my old block, though.

Turns out that it was the " Crank Snexor Sensing Cylinder. It was bent when the crank was tourqed on. And it was Slapin against the Cam posistioning sensor. Hrmm. Well i need a new one, no metal shavings got into the head cause i stopped trying to run it after the noise. So i need a new one of these, and i shoould be good to go, and my sensor dont look that bad, and the housing is in good condition, i was VERY lucky.

Ummm, you mean the reluctor on the end crankshaft behind the timing cog? And it's not the Cam positioning sensor, it's the Crank Angle Sensor.

Glad you figured it out, be more careful next time and make sure everything is lined up properly before torquing the crank pulley.
