How do I check transmission fluid?

Okay I followed the instructions in the manual.
Warmed up car, drove it around the block then shift to all gears. Finally put it in neutral and lift the E brake.

The engine should be on when checking transmission fluid right?

    Position of my ATF cap.

My problem comes when I cap it down in different positions hence I do not know the level of my ATF.

    One way I get this:

where the fluid is all over the indicator
If I cap it in the other way I get the same thing.

Also to check engine oil, the engine should be on as well correct? :?

the engine should be warm, running IN NUETRAL to check the trans.
if you look closely at the stick, youll see the "cold" and "hot" words stamped on it indicating where the fluid level should be.

and the car should NOT be running to check the engine oil.

Yep I can see the letters on your lower pic Gladiator the word COLD stands out particularly. Also...do NOT run your engine when checking the engine oil as Manybrews has stated...I know firsthand. I know lots of don't firsthand when it comes to cars...mainly cause I'm done it before.

Thanks, but the thing is the reading never comes out correctly. Its either one side of the dip stick is filled with oil or the other side.

Thats why I don't know if the reading is correct.
