yeah I did some reading...Mitsu and Nissan have partnered up (but its not a full bail out partnership just on one market). In the Japanese market Nissan has no presence in the mini-car market and Mitsu obviously does. So Nissan is leaveraging Mitsu advantage to make money, by letting Mitsubishi produce mini-cars under he Nissan brand...mitsubishi gets money and keeps plants operating a high capacity which saves money...I guess its a good deal.
Here's a couple good but short articles about the relationship:

Mitsu is not going out of business...that salesman is Bullshitting with you. The 9G is actually selling better than the Honda Acorn and Toyota Cam-Rhyme and so he's probably bitter about it...the 8G's don't hold value for shit because of Mitsu placing so many into the rental industry...as for the 9g, it has a limited participation in the rental industry so it'll hold the value better then the previous models....
The DE actually I can understand because I personally hav't sold one since the 9g has been out...thus far ES w/leather and LS w/o leather have been the two best selling models. And now we are suppose to get the new Galant SE this spring and the Ralli-Art version next year....
The Galant SE is basically a GTS version with the 2.4L Mivec instead of the 3.8L Mivec...so those who want the look of the GTS but the gas mileage of the DE/ES...can just get the SE for right around $20K.....
Mitsu's have never held their value..the only ones are the sports cars like the 3K..GST/GSX..and any VR4 especially....otherwise, the Endeavor would be the next in line then the 9G Galant....
Hrm..
Would be cool if Mitsu came out with an already turboed eclipse ..
like the new one 3.8 mivec but..
