    shifting

i saw someone's war story from a few months ago and part of it read as follows:

"As the light is getting ready to change, I see the GS inching up. I shifted to 3rd and watched the light. Light turned green the GS 300 took off like a bat outta hell. I hit the gas and took off with my nose right at his front door. As I was about to hit 4000 rpms I shifted to D and just took off flying right past him."

out of sheer curiosity, what's the point of starting out in 3 and then shifting to G???

    1. isn't the car's transmission smarter than 99% of drivers in knowing when to shift?

    2. isn't that bad for the transmission??

You can delay the upshifts by starting at a lower gear. The auto tranny is supposed to "know" that you are dragging if you floor the pedal, but sometimes it might shift up before (or after) you want it to. So you put your car to say, 2, and drag till almost red, then shift up to 3, then rinse and repeat to D. It is not "bad" for your tranny, just bad for your gas mileage!

Heck, get a manual if you are into drag!

    Ok, I wonder this then.

Today for instance, I was trying to get infront of someone so I can get into a turning lane and they wouldn't let me... So I gave it some gas  Only problem was that by the time the actual power I needed kicked in, I was already over in his lane and got real close to a motor cycle infront of me

You know when you open the throttle a considerable amount in an ATX, the car doesn't do anything for a brief second or two, then the RPM shoot up and then you feel some power. That's the tranny downshifting into 3rd right? So I can avoid this by manually down-shifting into third then giving her some throttle?
