actually, thats not quite right.. the last engine they had that actually used a pan gasket was the 2.6 liter 4 cylinder from the 80s.
but since then everything is sealed with sealant. and its MUCH, MUCH better. most car companies went to sealant years ago, because it works for the job a thousand times better than a gasket.
its a cast iron block.. cast iron rusts HORRIBLY, and there is no type of protection again that... nor does there need to be, because its an inch thick.
As far as RUST, my car has no rust as it's a southren car, in fact the engine bay looks brand spanking new after 2 years and 50k miles...its the region you're probbaly in.
I'll take a picture tonight, but I'm working until 10:00 PM CT so don't expect it until then.
perhaps in a southern state the surface rust isnt as bad (im in a snowbelt state)..
