Its probably a good idea to replace them. Once you get to the point where you can put a good boot back over them your most of the way there. A ball joint tool is really a good thing to pick up, I know its a free rental at O'reilly's.
i had my wheels off the other day and i realized the rubber on my balljoints are cracked in the middle. does that mean their bad? i dont see any fluid anywhere and they are completely dry. do they need to be replaced? how hard is the job?

Not a hard job bro. Go to Autozone and ask for ball joint press, deposit 100 bucks and get it back when you return the tool. Remove one bolt+nut on the bottom and the ball joint is out of the lower arm. Now press it out.

u have to replace it cause if u dont it will pop out it happen to me on my old car i saw the boots ripped and did care few months later the same side pop right out so make sure u change it

where can I pickup a ball joint for my 01 8G?
The only place I have found that sells them are NAPA. I paid $85 for a pair.
