    jailtime for speeding in IL

I saw on the news that in Illinois, come the new year, BLago speeding laws come into effect.

    going 30-39 over= $1,500 fine, class B Misdemeanor + potential 6 months in jail

going 40 over= potentially 1 year in jail and no option for court supervision

thats good, now they need make it at all states, and also giving out tickets and points off for talking/texting on cellphones and if your a minor 16-20 you lose your license until your 21

they're buggin, it would be easier to not allow someone to drive for about a year rather than jail them....

i feel like a whole year in jail for the 40+ is a little harsh for just one time

then again 40 over really is fast....

agree but normal people wouldn't really go above 40+ and for whose that does are really putting other people's life at risk. I am pretty sure it also comes with steep cost like this dude from another forum who got a first DUI in AZ....

    here is the break down....

    Lawyer $3500
    Court expenses/fines: $2500
Impounded car for a month: $800 (was in jail for a month)
    Paying for jail expense: $600
Alcohol classes: 36 hours (not sure what these cost)
Alcoholics Anonymous AA meetings : 15 AA meetings
Defensive driving school: 8 hours $120
Suspended license for 3 months (should have been a year, but cop didn't show)
Interlock device for 12 months: $1000
    Insurance increased: $100/mo

I don't think it's about losing freedom, its about protecting others. its a safety concern for many. Tragic accident happen everyday and the worst is when a young person is involved. Imagine waiting at a stop light and a truck rams you from the back and pushes you into ongoing traffic and another truck T-bones you and a 17 year old kid died. If people are more conscious how they are driving around others. Going 40 miles faster than any other car around you is fast and your chances of avoiding an accident are cut in half compared to someone going the correct speed. And then factor the idiots who are driving that fast and doing something else like talking on the phone or texting.

but i doubt that anyone caught the first time in IL over 30 miles an hour with a good lawyer they will not get jail time. But let it happen again and I bet you they will go straight to jail.

Well if you look at it when someone goes double the speed limit you can get hit with driving to endanger which could be more jail time. So IMO its not too bad. Just don't speed period lol.

40 over the speed limit is pretty darn fast if you think about it. School zone = 25 mph. 40 over = 65 mph with kids potentially crossing the street.

I don't speed, but if you're gonna speed, be smart about it. If you're in the middle of the desert and everyone around you is going 90 mph, the that's fine.

Everyone just needs to sit back, relax a bit, leave early, and drive slower. Less risk, less wasted gas, less wasted money, less stress.

check out the number in the effectiveness area of this wiki and think how increases and decreases in speed limit correlate to fatal car crashes.

That's way too harsh. They should just confiscate the vehicle and suspend the license and pay a fine.

    The jailtime is very unnecesary....

  15. #15
for local street speeds i say that jail time is fine. shouldnt even try to go 15 mph over when there could be people running across the street etc etc. Now i think instead of having ed driving classes after a ticket it should be standard before getting a license. Also licenses should be done in grades that specify what type of car can be driven. Theres alot of morons out there that shouldnt have the privilege to drive power houses.

Only sonata f5m42 swapped. N/A build in motion.

so rather than paying a fine to the state which is probably in debt cutting progams and shit they want to take you and feed you, house you, and hire ppl to watch you, bc u where driving to fast makes total sense me....... morons

    I don't think it's harsh. You shouldn't be going 40 over.

I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this.

Now if Illinois can raise the ridiculous 55mph Expressway speed limit...

Speeding leads to public endangerment. I would have started with harsh penalties in school zones first, but hey...

Only reason why I went over the 38+mph the speed limit was because I was driving my buddy who had a busted head after some idiot bricked my car n hit my friend in the head and busted his head open. I was going like close to 90 on 290 interstate, cop escorted me to hospital but still gave me a ticket -.-
