The biggest risk to running 235s or 245s in the particular setup in question will be rubbing. However, Blue, you are right, a larger sidewall will detract from overall performance.
Comparable tires, improved performance with the shorter profile Exclaim UHPs, nothing more.
225s are just about perfect on 8" wheels. 235s fit nicely on 8.5". But this also depends on the brand and model of tire as different manufacturers tires are slightly wider or narrower than others. For example General Exclaim UHPs stretch better than many other tires, but aren't physically as wide as a comparable Nexen N5000 of the same size.
