    Valve lifter noise

    there's a lot of threads about valve lifter noise and so far i've seen 2 options:
    1. put an additive such as Rislone, CD2...
    2. replace the lifters

    The additives have not worked for me, I've tried Rislone and CD2, don't want to try another additive.

    The one who replaced the lifters went to the dealership and cost $500. I won't be going that route.

    I am thinking of replacing the lifters with aftermarket lifters, they cost $85 on Ebay (Topline brand http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-03...item255fe54802) vs $280 for OEM.

    For those who have replaced the lifters, based on your own experience
    did it eliminate the noise?
    if it came back, how long before the noise came back?
    what brand did you use?
    basically, i want to know if replacing the lifter will solve this problem once and for all.

    BTW, I have an 01 4 cylinder, 122K miles, use 5w-30 regular oil replace every 3K. Noise started a month ago.

    From what I've learned replacing the lifters will only work for a short period of time before it happens all over again. If I recall correctly you might be able to just have them adjusted/ tightened. Also you should prob move up to a 10W-30 or 10W-40 due to your high mileage...
    I used to have lifter tick also (with low mileage on the odometer). I tried Lucas as an oil additive instead, and started running 91 octane only in my G, & havent had the problem since. Dont know for sure if thats what fixed it, but its definitely cheaper and worth a shot...

    I'm at 206k and my tick is very loud, some say t sounds like a little diesel. It was running funny, like hesitant to go so for a whole day I was punching it. Tick went away, maybe I freed a sticking valve or lifter, It'll probably come back though.

    I changed spark plugs the Sunday before last, and my ticking quieted tremendously. It's still there, but I can only hear it if I put my ear to the grill if the hood is closed, whereas before I could hear it if my windows were down at idle.

    I've had a lifter tick for a long time. I wouldn't work about it til it actually collapses and causes a misfire. I've been 50k+ on mine.

    It's really annoying and embarrassing. I want a permanent fix rather than a temporary fix from additives

    You could take them out and bleed them that might help

    i spent around 140 bucks to get my lifters replaced. there were 5 lifters that went bad. im still using 5w-30 and its quiet and i got over 252k miles on the car. i went the additives route at one point but i was spending money over time. dealership is probably charging alot to replace all the lifters. id take it to a shop and find out how many are bad. i know for sure itll be cheaper than the stealership.

    how long ago did you replace the lifters?

    I got a quote of $120 for the labor +$85 for the parts from Ebay. It's not a lot, but want to make sure this will get rid of the noise once and for all.

    Instead of additives, you can also run a 1/2-full quart of transmission fluid in the oil. This is an old school trick and actually works pretty good at cleaning things up and is used a lot for lifter tick issues.

    Bleeding them is by far the best starting point, provided it is done 100% properly per the FSM.

    about 9 months ago. Not all the lifters go bad just some of them. No lifter tick at all. Just as long as you change your oil overy 3k miles you shouldnt hear them for a long time. its just wear and tear. itll happen again eventually.

    I have heard of this trick, but i heard that you shouldn't run it more than 100 miles before tou rechange oil due to long term effects. Does anyone now for sure if this is true? I also heard that any atf will work the same?

    Yeah thats sounds right to me about only running it for a short time.Then you would have to do like two oil changes after to make sure it is flushed out.

    has anyone tried bleeding? how much? and how long are you lifter noise free since bleeding?

    hmm.. same problem here. ticking has gotten louder since i got my cold air intake and v6 tb. lucas helped for a day and i tried air purging them at 3k about 10 times for about 10 mins and came back the next day though. im just going to get a new head and have my old one machined to fix it. hopefully for a few more years at least. im going on 99k miles.
