AC only works under "High" setting

For some reason my AC only starts blowing air when set to the highest setting. Under all 3 of the other settings it does not work at all (no air blows, though the "AC" light stays on). The wierd thing is that my AC itself is working fine. I can drive around with the vents open, and AC on (at speed, it will "flows" ice cold air ~ the fan/compressor still do not function except at the highest setting).

Anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?

    Thanks.

I used to have a 99 Mercury Cougar and I had this same problem. The AC would only work on the highest setting. The part that needed to be replaced was the blower motor resistor. Basically I called the Ford dealership and ordered one for $14. So more than likely that is your problem.
    Hope this helps, good luck.

Is this the same for your heat???

If so, check the sensor (or resistor as stated above) that is located in the blower box under the dashboard at the passenger side. When you take this apart (3 screws) there is one wire clipped to a white ceramic sensor. I believe that if this sensor is not plugged in, your blower will not work properly.

    Sorry if this doesn't help

Sounds like a bad blower resistor just like what they said.

Yep it was the resistor. Replaced it, and AC works again.

My AC does the opposite, it works on settings 1-3, but not on 4. Same issue?

Mines doing the same thing, it just started today... couple of days ago, it shut off by itself, and i turned it to 3 and back to 4 and it kicked back on, but now it wont work right. i can still feel a little air coming out of there, like its going back to 1 or something. and there is still a load on the engine, it works great on 1 2 and 3, just not 4 anymore... any ideas if it is this resistor ?

I had this problem last year, i think it's 7mm bolts that hold the resistor in, the link has pics to reference.
