    Icon4 Crankshaft Pulley removal

    Hello Everyone,

I tried searching on many websites and found this forum. I searched heavily and still couldn't find my answer. here is my situation.

I have a 8g 2003 v6 3.0L and I am trying to change the head gasket and I am stuck. The Crankshaft Pulley seems to require some special tools. I found online the MB 991800 Pulley Holding Tool and then two pins for it MB991802. Is this the only way? (if so I am having trouble finding anywhere to purchase these tools) My Crankshaft pulley is a solid piece and I can not put anything through it to brace while I try to loosen the Crankshaft nut/bolt. Has anybody successfully done this on my engine before without any special tools? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've never used a special tool. Just use a 1/2" drive impact in the bolt. Problem solved.

Impact gun works awesome. Or what I used to do is disable ignition and wedge a breaker bar on the subframe and bump the starter. Works wonders.

if you are using the impact gun do you still have to make sure the pulley doesn't rotate?

The bolt just comes out. The bolt(s) to the crank pulley to the sprocket comes right out with a 3/8 impact.

He is working on a V6 as stated in his first post. 1/2" impact will be the correct drive size. I remember personally as I just had my crank pulley off roughly a month ago.

How did you hold the pulley in place? wont the pulley spin when you try to take it off?

With an impact gun it won't turn the crankshaft. only the bolt will turn. once the bolt is out, just wiggle and pull the pulley off with your hands.

I have a 200ft/lb impact wrench that I used and no luck! Should I just keep hacking at it until it gives. Right now it doesn't seem like the impact wrench that i have is going to work. How much force were you using?

you need a more powerful impact, PB blaster and a good air supply, if that doesn't do it, by all means, you should do the starter bump trick

Ingersoll Rand 2135TiMAX @ 100psi. It was an unfair fight to say the least.

That's the one I have, it's capable of removing 2 1/2" hex head sockets on our railcar heavy components that get torqued in excess of 520 lb ft! I love this gun!

where an impact with a limited air supply fails, a starter motor succeeds

This is true, these kinds of impact guns need a good amount of CFM's to do the job, a pancake compressor ain't gonna cut it.

^ A small pancake would probably be enough for 5 seconds of hammering.
