    The factory intake

I ran this over with the boys at Club 3G once already, but I want to know what you guys think about the factory intake. I received my new inlet duct (the little funnel looking piece that goes over the radiator) today, and I decided to see just how much air it could get. After I put it back on, I took some putty and flattened it out to about a quarter of an inch thick, and covered the opening of the intake, then shut the hood. After reopening the hood, the putty was smushed up pretty thin, about 1/8 of an inch thick or so that I could measure. That for me says that there is almost no clearance between the hood and the air inlet. I shut the hood for 30 minutes without any obstructions, and when I opened it the brand new intake's foam cushion was already deformed and flattened in some areas. Now I know that there really is no clearance between the hood and intake. I can't figure out how the heck our factory intake can possibly draw in enough air for the engine during normal operations, not to mention when we go WOT. BMW at least puts their intake opening aiming towards the ground instead of into the hood. If you look at the underside of our hood you'll see that they make no allowances for the fact that the intake is right there, it's almost like the hood was designed to seal the opening of our intake.

yeah I agree with you there, it almost looks like the stock air intake is an afterthought. Yes the hood seals up on the top leading edge of the grill, but I believe the air the intake gets is from the middle of the grille. If you look at some JDM grilles, you can see that some have some extra holes near the intake.

WOT = Wide Open Throttle, i.e floorin' it.

Yeah I think you're right...what I noticed on the 9g intake design was that there are two holes cut into the hood right above where the hood closes over the intake. I guess they saw the error of their ways the first time.
