If I'm not mistaken there are a bunch of hoses going all over the engine. Look on your little sticker ont he under side hood of your car. There is a vaccum hose routing diagram which might answer your specific questions.

i can't speak for the i4's or the 99's but there is a service campain for the 2k-03 v6's for the sticker for the vacuum hose routing. there is an error on the orignal diagram and you hsould be getting the correct diagram for those hoses in the mail.
