Faction said he thought he remembered someone getting a ford alternator in their G for $100 - is this true? And if so then how difficult is it to make it work? Any ECU problems etc?

I think the biggest problem would be getting it mounted correctly on the existing bracket. If I recall correctly, the belt tensioner for that belt is on the alternator bracket...

As far as ECU problems - doubtful. The ECU does not monitor your voltage or amps.

Faction thought it was a pretty good fit - anyone know here that's done it?

I think it was an alt from either a Lincoln or the Mercury cougar/contour car.
