As you can see from the pic, the overlays have about a 25% opacity and the stock bulb (left) makes the white overlay look yellowish-orange and the aftermarket blue bulbs (right) make them look white. I highly recommend aftermarket bulbs.

I originally got the idea from Danger DanJ.
http://66.98.150.64/~clubtgc/forum/viewtop...pic.php?t=26188 ('http://66.98.150.64/~clubtgc/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26188')

I took out my instrument panel and scanned the gauges into Photoshop.

It's an inverted stock (white instead of black) design except for the faded (gradients) black to red in the speedometer & rpm gauges.

I plan to use high quality photo film. Not paper but film. Paper will turn to crap due to the sunlight while film should not fade or discolor.

The thing is that the film is expensive and I have to buy 50 sheets.

I only need one or 2 sets but then I'll have 40+ sheets left.

Is anyone interested in buying a set for $10 shipped?

I just want to make up for the extra 40+ sheets that I don't need.

i think theres gonna be a problem. your so called high quality paper is opaque so no lights will go thru. therefore at night, we wouldnt be able to read our gauges. right???

I'm not using paper. It's thin FILM.

F I L M

The reason I'm using "film" is because most photo "paper" is thicker and light cannot pass through very well.

Sure looks hot and unique. However I could recommend that you add more indicators, like for every MPH if possible.

I am very interested since this only cost 10 bux

you really didn't have to scan the guages, a few people like me and danj have the templates online for you guys to download. they also have like each indicator each marking as a seperate layer so it can be a lil bit easier to work with.

but yea, have you tried some transparancy film. i know here at skool they sell it for like 95 cents a sheet, or like 15 bucks for a pack of 30. i've used that in my car too and its held up pretty well

I downloaded Danger DanJ's templates but I figured I'd do it all from sccratch. (learning experience)

Transparent film/tint is more difficult to see the indicators during the day than the white opaque film.

I had to buy a 50 pack of white film.

I'm putting the overlays in tonight to see how well the light shows though.

I can't wait to recalibrate the needles too... YEEE HAWW!!! *sarc*

if you cut out the stock faces, you don't have to remove the needles, just make the holes for the needles, a lil bit bigger.

I don't want to ruin the stock faces.

It's actually not that difficult after you do it about 6-12 times.

It's just a pain in the ass...

i know that. iv'e been there. used to have a different set like for each time my mood changes. but yea just saying. it gets scary when you first drive the car after changing your gauges and the needles don't work.

i think the ultimate alternative to this "film" paper is printing out onto a transparency, like the shit they used back in high school to give lessons. would that work? i dont have any experience in custom gauges.

I've got this $HIT down to an EXACT SCIENCE!!!

RPM: Get the needle as close as you can to the peg.
SPEEDOMETER: Before you take the needle off, pull it over the peg and remember where it points to.
GAS: Fill up your tank before you put the needle back on.
TEMP: Remember where the needle points to when your car is warmed up.

That film does look better than the paper I had, but I had no problems with the paper ones lighting up. Was the film you bought white already? I'd assume it was since there is no white ink in your printer.

Yeah, it was a white film and I only used black, blue and red ink.

Did yours light up white with stock bulbs?

The only problems for me were the stock bulbs. They made the white film look orange so I got some aftermarket blue (looks white) bulbs.

I'm actually very impressed on how well the film worked.

Thanks to Danger DanJ and pinoyesv6.

yea if you look at some of your stock bulbs. like the one that goes around the cigarette lighter. the bulb will actually have a blue gel cap to it to filter out that yellow light and make it white.

You can get the bulbs at WALMART for $3 to $5...

...or you can get the colored caps for about the same price.

With my paper gauge faces, they were white in the day since the paper was white and at night the white lit up red because I replaced the stock bulbs with red ones.

I'm going to try some blue colored bulbs this weekend.

What's funny is that the colored bulbs ($3 for 2) are almost half the price of the white ones ($5 for 2).

Another strange thing is that the blue bulbs I bought originally glowed blue with the black overlays but now glow white with the white overlays.

Be careful with some of the cheap bulbs - I originally bought some cheap bulbs from autozone and the colors were not consistent - some bulbs were a bit more purple than blue.

I got some good results with LED bulbs from www.autolumination.com - not quite as bright as regular white bulbs, but looks better IMHO.

What kind did you get?

What # or size do I need to get? 194?

I wonder what UV LEDS would look like???

WOW!!! THEY'RE CHEAP TOO!!!!

I bought 5x 194 4 LED bulbs. Shipping was pretty fast, only took a couple of days.

Ask Wolfman about the UV, as I think he also bought some of those.

What's wrong with using the white faced GTZ guages? I like mine...

Not everyone has white gauges...

I had to change mine as the ugly turquoise (of all the colors mitsu had to pick, this one!?) gauges were getting to me

These are for people that want to "change" to white faces.

I'm going to take 5 sets of pictures so you guys can see how they look at night in different colors.

1. Stock bulbs
2. White bulbs
3. Blue bulbs
4. Green bulbs
5. Red bulbs

i got those originally from danj. the only difference from those and the ones you'd probably get from danj is that my version is missing all those extra layers that danj used to make his gauges. my copy just has everything you need to make a basic gauge face.

Do you still use the ones you printed out or did you buy some S7's???

I love the design and how they look at night but I don't like how they look during the day.

they are boring. plus u can't just buy them by themselves... gotta get the whole cluster.

i'm on my third set of EL gauges and i think i'm allready bored w/ the ones i have now.

i think the ones by clone are cool... good job buddy! now imagine if you could just get blank EL and put that behind these film versions and then you could just change the film versions' color and design whenever you wanted (original speedhut design).

just as an idea, you could have a tach like this:

im using the reverse EL's. i don't really like the daytime look of the s7's. but that's just me.
