Still got a lot to do, including a bit more filling and sanding:

I'm still debating if I should paint them black, or colormatched, or colormatched with black mesh.

Colormatched w. black mesh sounds good, but you won't even be able to tell theres mesh unless you're close by. That project overall is lookin toit tho https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Wow, dude. Thanks looks REALLY cool!! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif That looks 100 times better than stock. I also think color match the outside would look good. The mesh may look better nonpainted.

Really nice. Now if you could do the same for your fog light housing...

Looks very nice. Kinda reminds me of a JDM grill. I recommend that you paint it to match the color of your car. Btw, what did you used to fill the grilles? Post some pics when you finish the job!

Thanks for the comments.

I used fiberglass and bondo to fill in the holes left from cutting out the slats.

Looks good - now finish it! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

What mesh material did you use? Metal or plastic and what dim are the openings?

Yea I like that mesh better than the one I'm using... what kind is that?

Thats the metal screen you use for vents - the pattern is much smaller than gutter mesh, plus its a bit stiffer.

I'm actually going to try expanded metal, and using this stuff for fitment purposes.

i think you should color match with an unpainted grill, BUT behind the grill you should paint it black so you cant see it back there

Update:
Here's a pic of the hacked up grill before I fiberglassed it:
http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/489000-489999/489054_78_full.jpg

Here's an updated pic - got both grills done, painted the mesh black, put a plastic/rubber gasket around the mesh (door molding, lol). Still have to epoxy the mesh in and fill in a few imperfections here and there, then color match it (and paint the inside area black too)
