View Full Version : Addco rear sway bar for the 8G *UPDATE - THE NEW ONE FITS!*

After months and months of having the bar on order, it was finally produced and I got it two weeks ago. This past weekend I finally got a chance to install it and it doesn't fit! The bar bolts up to the crossmember just fine, but then the ends are too long to be able to attatch to the stabalizer links. Addco supposedly had a problem with their prototype and fixed it, but apparently not, unless this is a different problem. The stock bar took forever to get off becuase the nuts for the stabalizer links were rusted on really bad. After all the trouble to get them off, then find that the new bar doesn't fit, really sucks! Also, the holes in the brackets that hold the bar to the crossmember were punched out poorly and had to be opened up more with a dremel to get the bolts to fit through. Here is a pic to show you where the bar is too long.

You sure they sent you the right one. I could see it be off slightly if they produced it wrong. But that's a big difference.

It's got to be the one for the Galant. It even has the bend in the bar so it can clear the jack point on the bottom of the spare tire well. What are the odds of some other bar having that same bend and still fitting relatively the same? Could it be that the 8G's are different for other years? I can't see that being the case, but you never know.

hey dave can't you move the stabilizer bar so that it can meet with the sway bar?? I don't know.... Then you must've tried it already

Yeah, I know in that pic it looks like it would reach if you moved the link, but believe me, it doesn't come close. That pic is at a weird angle. If you look at the lower trailing arm below the end of the sway bar, you can see how the sway bar extends way over it and the stabalizer link can't move past that arm. Even if the stabalizer link was long enough, it would hit against the lower trailing arm.

David I was checking on that part and the part number you should have should be 2149 according to ADDCO. I think that's right I left the info at work.

Yeah, on the top of the instructions that came with the bar it says 2149 - 99-02 Mit Galant Rear, but it's hand written and the whole thing is photocopied. The instructions are generic and could be followed for pretty much all sway bars.

It's being checked on, so we will see what Addco has to say for themselves.

Those won't work, but thanks anyway. I finally got a call from Addco yesterday. Someone from the tech department was asking me questions about the fitment and said they would check it out and call me back in 2 weeks. They hope to have a new one to send me by then. Cross your fingers.

Still nothing. Addco sucks. I emailed them last week and they told me they were working on it. WTF! How long does it take to fix something that is already made?

hey I've read in the Eclipse forums.. that if your going to put on a sway bar you need couple of other parts... heres the link
http://www.eclipseforums.org/fortopic168868.html ('http://www.eclipseforums.org/fortopic168868.html') but just substitute the ST sway for the Addco.

I'm not sure if it helps or anything, and then you might have looked at it already...

No, those extra parts are only for the Eclipse guys with the RS model because the RS model doesn't come with a rear sway bar at all. The same thing would go for the DE model Galant. I would have got the ST rear sway bar along time ago, but you have to bang flat or cut off the jack point that is attached to the spare tire well on the Galant to get the bar to fit. Looking back, I should have just did it. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

I got an email from the President at Addco and they finished the modifications on the new bar. The new bar was supposedly sent to the platers and it is supposed to ship out on Friday. I'll post here when I finally get it installed, assuming it fits.

What a coincidence that you posted, because I finally got the new bar on Tuesday. After I was told the new one would be sent to me and I waited a couple weeks, I sent multiple emails, 'til finally I got an answer. This time around they came through and sent the new bar. I'm not sure when I'll be able to install it, it's too damn cold to get on a concrete floor. I matched it up to the old one, and the ends are shorter, but they might not be short enough. I'll post here as soon as I install it, assuming it fits.

https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif Trust me, I want to install it ASAP, but I was waiting for some new end links that came yesterday. When I was trying to install the first version of the bar the end links were rusted at the ends where you need to use an allen wrench. The proper size wouldn't fit due to the rust so I forced it and stripped it. Actually, anyone that has alot of rust under their cars might want to get some new end links too. I'm planning on installing the new bar this weekend.

Finally installed the new bar today and it fits. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Click here ('http://www.dangerdanj.com/addco_rsb_install.htm') for a tutorial that I put together.

One thing that sucks is that when I start up the car, the exhaust piping rattles against the bar. Once the car is started, and when I'm driving, it doesn't rattle though. I have the Dynomax cat-back exhaust by the way. I'm pretty sure the stock exhaust will have plenty of room so it doesn't hit. I can raise my muffler up a bit by adjusting the hangers, so let's hope it's enough to get rid of the rattling.

awww man, i wanted the cat-back AND this sway-bar. let me know how it works out with moving the hanger. so how exactly do you plan to adjust the hanger? is it something easy? or is it kind of a custom fabrication sort of job?

I only went for a quick drive and I didn't hit many twisty roads. I did hit one on ramp with a sharp turn and it felt smoother than normal, but I can't really tell if it was due to the bar or what. I'll have to hit some more familiar curves to get a better feel.

I don't plan on moving the hanger, just bending the ones attached to the ehhaust. I'll just bend them down so it brings the exhaust up. If that doesn't work, I'm thinking of getting something to wrap around the bar.

How much is the bar going to cost us? :?:
I'm not sure. I think the list price for it is around $160 or $170, but I got it for quite a bit cheaper for being the guinea pig and agreeing to do a tutorial. Do I smell a group buy?

Well, I already mentioned the exhaust, so I assume you mean the jack point. It does touch it a little, but so far I haven't heard any unusual clanking noises or anything like that. I have to give it a good test drive before I really say for sure though. It's supposed to snow tonight, so who knows when I'll take the Galant back out again.

I sent an email to Dan Osborne, the Vice President at Addco and the guy I've been dealing with, and I let him know the bar fit. I also showed him the tutorial I made and he said that he would have the ends of the bar forged thinner so that the nut for the end links can go on farther.

I also asked him about a group buy and whether or not people can be assured that they will get the correct bar if they ordered one right now, but he didn't respond to that part of my email. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

Hey, does anone want the old Addco bar that doesn't fit? I think if you drill some new holes in the ends, it will fit. You may have to trim the end a little too, but maybe not. I would have tried it myself, but I was told that it won't be too easy to drill through the metal since it's probably heat treated after the holes were drilled, and that the metal would be too hard.

So after about 2 months of having the bar, is it worth the money, or have you not seen any improvement? And the group buy is probably a no go huh?

Yes, it's definitely worth the money. Installing a thicker rear sway bar is the best thing you can do to help reduce understeer. Many people have PM'd me about different suspension things and they talk about getting the D3 Chassis stiffening kit. I like that kit, but a thicker rear sway bar is a much better modification and I recommend one before getting the D3 kit.

There is one road in my area that runs along the side of a mountain, next to the Hudson River, and it's very curvy. I took my car there and was taking those curves like I never thought I could. It's sometimes hard to travel that road fast because you usually get someone in front of you going real slow. I guess with the huge drop down to the river on one side, people get scared.

Here is a picture from the scenic pull over on that road. It doesn't show you the real curvy parts of the road though.
