I just called my local Mitsubishi dealership and they quoted me @ $440 for a full timing belt replacement. I told them that I could prolly get my own timing belt to save 60 bucks and bring it down to $360, but they said there could be no warranty from that point because they didnt provide the belt themselves. Should I get my own belt that would be less than 60 or just go w. theirs?

check around first, you may be able to find better pricing. DEalers are often the highest priced.

the mitsu warranty for parts is like 1 year or 12k miles. or if you want to split that up, its like 5 dollars per month or 5 dollars per 1k mile. by also giong with the dealer they will warranty the labor too which is a good thing. the i4's timing belts job is a lil tricky and many outside shops fudge it.

if that was me, i'd go with the extra 60 bucks and go with something that i can trust.

that sounds about right. Its insane what dealerships charge for labor...thats basically what gets you. Charge you 50 bucks just to pop your hood.

my v6 came out to almost $1200 for the full timing belt job (water pump, spark plugs etc). you guys are getting off extrememly cheaply,so stop whining about paying less than $500.00 total.

i got all 4 of my belts replaced for 427.00 from my mechanic...the dealer will rape you with a dry condom...then again once you put an artermarket part on ya car, the warranty is supposedly voided anyway...

he also said he got more than the timing belt done, my local mitsu dealership quotes me $400 w/o the water pump, he got the works, so $1200 on a v6 sounds a bit right.

Was that done at a Mitsu dealer? What else did they do for the $1200? Belts & hoses, tranny flush, BJ while you waited for them to bring it out? https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

I bought about $900 in parts for my 99 GTZ,and changed out just about everything since the top of the V6 was disassembled for belts & water pump. After it was all over the bill was around $1600! But sice I bought the car for $4100,its still a good deal

I went to the dealership yesterday to get the radio codes and asked how much it would be for the 60K service. I was quoted at $560 with the timing belt, pulleys & water pump change. I thought that was a good deal and since I have 51K now I'll start saving for that job.

I just found out just the interior air filter-the one behind my glovebox-is almost $43.00! And it looks like no one changed it since 1999 too,its freakin' disgusting! It must be about a 7x9" piece of corrugated paper with a plastic face

If you haven't already bought one of those ridiculously overpriced filters, go to OSH and buy a decent (not one of the 50 cent fiberglass ones) central A/C filter. Buy one that's big enough to get 4 pieces the size of the cabin filter out of it. Remove the old filter material from the plastic holder. Cut out a piece just slightly larger (so it will fit in tightly) than the size of the cabin filter and stick it in the plastic holder. It's not a HEPA, but for $5 you've got 4 of them. You can search for threads about "cabin filter" and you'll find Pinoy's tutorial if you need more info on this. I did this a few weeks ago, and it works fine.

Yeah, V6 is more expensive. But I went to a guy who used to work as a mechanic for Mitsu. He replaced timing belt, accessory belt, and water pump for $450. I didn't do the whole 60k service - no plugs nor wires on advice of manybrews in one of the old posts about platinum plugs and 60k service... Will wait till 100k for that, if I still keep the car, and yeah, I have a V6. It's been 6months since then, going strong.

yeah, the coolant was changed too with the water pump. ATF I did at the dealer. Oil - myself

I did all the "might-as-wells" because I figured if the previous owner(s) were so screwed up not to do 3 free recall issues, they probly didnt do alot of anything else, either.I shouldnt have much to worry about for at least the life of the car, now! I think I got a decent deal...with the purchase price, maint. bill,& all the mods I've done so far,I'm still only at approx. $6600 total

Deals like that you should jump on, cause it could get way more expensive.

The only tricky part it the gear-deal on the balance shaft... gotta make sure and mark everything. Did mine in a few hours... cost: ~$30 for a timing belt, then another ~$20, 'cause I decided to replace the main/accessory belts as well.

Just a tedious job and no harder than changing a belt on anything else. I do recommend that you guys make an effort to do it yourself. Seen ALOT of posts on here telling you to NOT do this, because it's risky. Not so true. I like to do my own work and trust NO ONE doing it for me.

If someone's in teh DFW area, maybe I can give you a hand and we can take some pics for a write-up.
