Went to refuel today and the pump kept clicking off every gallon or so like the tank was full, so I did it by hand. I estimated about 11 gallons of fuel needed and at around 10 and a half it felt like I was topping off for real so I stopped. My question is is this a problem with my car, or the pump? I don't know how the stuff knows when you're full.

when the back pressure builds up it triggers the valve closed. Its the pump.

Yeah, happens once in a while. Sometimes it helps to hold the handle up and let the angle of the nozzle point down at a sharper angle when that happens. If still have problems, you might try NOT pushing the nozzle all the way in which helps sometimes too. But like Burthold says, it's the pump that acts up sometimes.

Oh one more thing you can try. Some ppl top off and just overflow their tank and the extra fuel goes back into the cover of the nozzle, this is actually designed to catch the excess vapor that come out of the gas tank when you displace it with fuel. Well when someone overfills, this return vapor section of the hose gets clogged by fuel. To clear it, stop pumping gas and point the nozzle down and lift the hoses behind it to let that fuel out but make sure you don't get it on your shoes, lol. Hope you understand what I'm describing, lol. After that, try pumping the gas in again to see if it's any better.

I guess I'm lazy but I HATE having to hold the pump on... give me the little trigger latch!!!!

definitely try holding the pump at an angle. i've had that problem with pumps that have the sock over the actual pump.

I think there may be a service bulletin out about this problem for some Galants, Talk to your dealer and see what they say.
