Here's a follow up from this thread:
https://www.thegalantcenter.org/viewt...pic.php?t=34726 ('https://www.thegalantcenter.org/viewtopic.php?t=34726')

Did a bit more work on the lip - Some updated pics:

I plan to fill in the side gap with some fiberglass.

I've been thinking - should I keep it black or colormatch it to my bumper?
Here's a quick PS of what the final product should look like:

hey got mine installed without the side gaps... what do u think i should do about the side gaps?.. i see u filled ur gaps??? wouldn't it look weird when u see it closee....??.... and by the way... keep it black.. makes it look JDM...LOL//

i say keep it black. if you had the CTR aka the CSI lip, i'd color match it. but since it looks like u have a mugren replica, which is a lil bit more agressive than the CTR lip, the black would look good.

i think the easiest way would be do put something behind the empty part....like a flat piece of plastic and tape it to each side at the back....kinda making like something to hold the 2 pieces together.........when u got that flat piece attatched to both lip pieces,,,u will have to lay fiberglass on that piece,,therefore bringing both pieces of the lip together as one.....keep laying fiberglass until u made it strong anough and reached a good point,,,,then u have to send it down and blend it in

and actually u might wanna do what he did as well....cut the lip and put the already made edge at the edge,,,since its easier to fill in the middle part than to make an entirely new edge.......u need some fiberglass mat,,,fiberglass resin,,,,sandpaper...and maybe a sanding machine if u can find one.....try and stay away from bondo btw...........fill in with fiberglass,,sand down till u get the proper shape.......keep sanding till u think its almost perfect,,,,then if u have any imperfection on pinholes,,use just resin to give it the final layer on top,,then prime ,wetsand, and thats it

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(neel9)</div><div class='quotemain'>hey ok.. as i see in the pics.. u have a bonda under the lip... right? and what is the black piece on the right??</div>

Just to clarify - Bondo is a brand, that has many products from body filler to fiberglass/resin, etc.

What I have there is a body filler patch - its basically a piece of metal mesh that is there for support. I also had covered part of the bumper with a layer of masking tape and aluminum foil, to keep the fiberglass and resin from sticking to the stock bumper.

I had cut about 3 inches from the ends of the lip - that is the black piece on the right.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>does the bond go outer part of the lip or the inner? and what do i just place fibergalss over the bonda... meaning the extra piece which i need to attach to the lip?..please help..</div>

The body filler patch is under the lip, but in all honesty it would be easier if it was on the outside. I then put fiberglass+resin on top of that. I'll probably put a few more layers both on the outside and inside for extra strength.

Once the fiberglass has set, I will use body filler on top of that to smooth everything out.

I'll post more pictures of my progress.

ok so i should get fiberglass and resin right and some net for support?

pinoyesv6
03-07-2005, 11:48 AM
the mesh is totally unnecessary for support. a good fiberglass job should be plenty strong. it just give a place to build the fiberglass off of. another way of doing it without the mesh is to cover the gap in the front with a layer or two of fiberglass and then start build up the fiberglass layers from the back.

To be honest, I have to agree here - the mesh was a bit more of a pain in the ass to work with than expected.

did you just span the gap with the fiberglass or did you drill holes in the lip and covered the holes and the gap.

i learned this first hand, fiberglass and plastic don't go together. if you just spanned the gap, then when hte temperatures change the plastic will change a lil bit too and the fiberglass will fall off.

fiberglass doesn't stick to abs. once the fiberglass is cured you can probably just snap the fiberglass u just did clean off. but don't do it! just saying

what you want to do is near the edges of the cut in the lip. drill some fairly nice size holes. i suggest doing this with the lip off of the car.

then just fiberglass like u would normally. making sure you fiberglass both sides.

pretty much what you are doing is having the fiberglass and resin from both sides meet and form a sort of key that locks the two materials together.

Well, instead of just using the metal mesh, then fiberglassing over that, I would use some kind of metal rods or something to make a stiffer skeleton/frame. It was pretty hard to get the shape right with just the metal mesh so the extra skeleton would have made things much easier.

03-15-2005, 09:53 AM
yea off course but as it is black.. no one will really know is there is a full lip or not.. u know what i mean until and unless some one really comes close and looks at it.. so.. black color is awsome https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif but might get extension later after some one does a DIY for me..lol..

Thats ghetto if you dont make the extension, You could spot it from a mile away. Just suck it up and go learn to fiberglass, its not hard at all! You will never get anywhere on your car if you never learn to do anything by yourself! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

you really don't need a tutorial anyways. the pictures that wanderingpinoy posted is pretty much the tutorial. all that is missing is words that say "cut here" "fill with fiberglass" and then "sand smooth"

and even with that the techniques will vary depending on the fitment of the parts.

cutting where wanderingpinoy cut for me wouldn't work because with the lip im getting, it would be hard to line up.

so even with a tutorial, you can't get too detailed.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(pinoyesv6)</div><div class='quotemain'>what did you do with the center part? did you just leave it on? you have plans for that?</div>

I just left the center part alone - figured it would help keep the lip held on - most likely I will to extend the middle part to fill in the middle better, or if it holds, maybe just even cut it off.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(seth98esT)</div><div class='quotemain'>Looks good, cept in the top right corner, is that the stock bumper peaking out?</div>

Yeah, its just actually hanging there - I'll use 3m double sided tape as well as trim screws in the wheel well

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(cardude03)</div><div class='quotemain'>...if this civic lip fits, that means all civic lips fit?...</div>
Yes and no - different civic years had differently shaped bumpers - the one that closely matched the 02-03 bumper was the 99-01 civic lip (aside from the shortness).

Some of the other civic year lips had more of an angle on the sides, that made a big gap - the reason why the 99-01 lip fit was that the shape was a nice arc with no sharp angles.

not necessarily. the CSI aka the CTR lip and the mugen lips go on the lower part of the numper.

http://www.typerx.com/image/honda/c99-f-typm-s.jpg

whereas lips like this Tsunami lip go a lil bit higher

http://roadcatalogs.com/store/media/tsulip.gif

so that would would mean a lil bit more modification/fabrication to do.

another thing you have to think of, especially with moy agressive lips is the lines on the lip. making sure that they flow with the lines on the car. ov course the lines line up with the civic but the lines on the galant are different.

Neel9, It does look like you're in over your head on this project, Just pay a shop to do it and ask then if you can hang out while they do it so you can see how it is done and if need be, you can do it again.

PionyesV6, About the body lines matching, the actually seem to match the galant pretty well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/wanderingpinoy/FrontLip/2005-03-1721-59-20DCP_1726s.jpg Look at the start and the end of the vents on the lip compared to the start and the end of the Fog light vent. They look close. Good enough for me acutally. I think it matches better than on the civic.

but if you look at this tsunami lip
http://roadcatalogs.com/store/media/tsulip.gif

you see how the lip kinda goes into the opening on the bumper??

well we don't have those openings so you're gonna have to do somethign with that..

and then with the middle opening some other lips use that middle opening for some kinda lines on the lip. the galant's opening is bigger so it might not fit right.

best thing to do is to try the lip on for fitment before you buy it. i haven't bought my front lip yet though its in my friends garage. we're gonna try it on for fitment so i can decide if its worth modifying.

what kinda body work did you do?? the lip doesn't even fit? you didn't paint it. you didn't modify it. all you did was stick it onto your car. defintely not body work. if that was body work you woulda made sure it fit right and no more modifications had to be done prior to paint.

HeadAche,

Very nice lip dude! You said its a 98 integra lip and have done a lot of modifications to make it fit. I was wondering how much kind of work is involved, I mean did you had to do a lot of bondo work or something like that?

Also, is this the same lip that you have:

By the way, your car looks hot! Is that an evo rear spoiler at the back? Can you post some pics? please...

Thanks,

Yea i will try and get the beam pattern done 2morrow.. but yea that is the same lip that i bought...The hardest part of modding the lip is actually cutting it and bending it back to fit the bumper. Because when you take it first out the box and try to fit it up, you will notice that it has a weird bend to it causing it not to fit flush. Like one side will fit awesome but the other side will look all deformed. So i had to take a heat gun to it for hours to bend it to shape, then cut about 2" per side and then make new ends to fit around the side of the OEM bumper. Then the middle section of it has to be sanded to fit the middle of the OEM bumper, and used a dremel to make it sit somewhat flush. but all in all it came out pretty good from the pics and what not. Total time was like a week because i got kids and they were always around trying to help...

that was actually my super VR-4, but this is what it looks like now...lol..

yea.. the integra lip which i had one.. one side will look good but the other side one wil have to press it hard in order for u to make it look flush.. u will have to cut the ends as well as the top part of the lip which is suppose to be screwed in...

the wing was junked.. it had way more damage than what you can actually see from the pic, and i deemed that it was unsellable. Pretty much it woudl cost about 300 just to get it re-fiberglassed and then another 200 for paint. But what had happened what that i was racing my boyz integra, and after I had hit the nitrous and looked up the wing went went flying off the trunk down the road.. it was pretty cool to see it though.

I did a Civic lip project also:

Don't mind the ERAC1NG.com grille

Screw bolting it on, my uncle and I mold it together, although it took weeks of trial and error.

Forget about buying another lip to fill the gap, I used an old 2000 bumper from a junk yard, heat gun it , and mold with plastic adhesive molding

Mold the two together so it looks flush

When this done and painted, I'll post the assesment and the how to's if you want it done professionally. I like thank the guys who thought of this (you who you guys are) and my uncle who helped me through this process. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif
