After few more agressive accelerations I've noticed a strange smell when car stops, something like burned oil...

What could be a reason? Tranny?

i know that volkswagens have a problem where something starts leaking oil, and the oil drips onto something hot, and makes a horrible burning smell.

I've changed oil 500miles ago...
I haven't noticed any oil leaks after night under car.

could be your tranny. if it's a 03, take it to the dealer under warranty

I guess it depends on what it smells like?

After you park the car, open the hood and track down the smell. Smell the ATF, oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid and see if what you smelt in the cabin matches under the hood.

It could be the Catalytic Converter.

i get that weird smell after coming from being on the highway alot,,,,,and after alot of accelerations,,,,the smell seems to come from the tranny....its a very distinctive smell..everytime i drive hard its there....

I happed to run over one of those plastic grocery bags, and the damn thing caught on my cat and melted onto it - didn't realize this until I started to smell burning plastic when I was stopped.

check your tranny fluid. i kow thats what i smell when i run my car hard. just changed mine yesterday and boy was it burnt.

I've 36k miles but I don't know if the previous owner have changed it :?
I'll change it on friday.Now I'll drive under 2500rpm :wink:

Can you be more descriptive of the smell? Check your serpentine belt for damage, fraying, etc..

FYI, I've been using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF + 12oz of Lucas Transmission Fix and it runs great - just finished my second tranny flush (25,000, and 45000) - the old fluid wasn't too bad either.

in your previous post you said u had an 03. which means your car only has an internal filter. so you odn't have to change it unless you are ripping your tranny apart.

if you had an older 8g with the external filter then you'd might want to change it.

mitsu just gave us an internal filter so you don't have to change it. you can change it but it means opening up the tranny.

One more thing: how may liters of oil are needed to change?
Service manual says 8.5l https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/ohmy.gif but as far as I know not all of it will leak away...

i just changed my fluid earlier in the week.

the manual says you need 10 quarts minimum to flush an fill the tranny.

after the flush and fill, the manual says to check the level and adjust as necessary.

first time i changed my fluid i pulled it off in 10 quarts.

this time around i had to use 12 quarts.

i say just buy that case of 12 and have an extra bottle or two lying around just incase you have to add more in the future

ive had a strange smell come about lately under the hood. it smells strongest at the radiator cap. it has a burnt metallic odor. the coolant was flushed about 5 weeks ago and had the tranny flushed 2 weeks ago. started noticing the odor just last week. checked all the hoses and everything looks good.

there was some small spillage, but it was cleaned up. it's possible some escaped me so i'll have to look around better.

all clean and the smell is gone. drove a good two hours on the highway just to make sure.
