View Full Version : Independent foglight switch with dash indicator

I just finished wiring up my foglights to an indepent switch and I still have indicator functionality.

I had my foglights wired up to the parking lights since last year and I got bored with that look, so I decided to change it up a little. I also took off the bright corner mod.

This was very simple. Ok, there are 3 wires coming from the foglight relay. 1 white and 2 red. I cut the white wire (this should be the ground) in half. Now you have 2 white wires. The half of the wire thats going up to the fuse box is the one we will be working with. Strip the end and run it thru the firewall under the dash. (the wire is short but I just got a longer piece of wire and extended it)

Get a 2 pronged switch and connect 1 prong to the wire thats coming in thru the firewall and then connect the next prong a ground wire. (I just tapped the ground wire for the cigarette lighter.

Now you have the ability to turn on your foglight using the new switch and the dash indicator will still work. There is no need for the car to be running or any of the lights on for this to work.

that's cool
you gonna mount the switch or just have it chillin like that
I have 2 switches I have to mount
1 hanging from above the ashtray
and 1 thats coming from along the side of the ashtray
I just have to get better switches..prolly just the little toggle ones
and figure out an easy to get to place to install them

so with this mod, there's a chance i can leave my fog on and potentially drain my battery?

more than likely thats the case, its a good Idea, just have to be mindful of your Fogs that's all

Yup, thats the case. I'm gonna change the switch to one that lights up when the car starts, so I wont forget. But you can always check the indicator lights when leaving the car.

that or you can always run a relay to automatically shut down the circuit when the car shuts down.

How would I hook up the relay?

pinoyesv6
03-26-2005, 07:34 PM
you're gonna need a spst relay.

85 will come from a positive. like the cigarette lighter. this is your trigger. something that comes on with the car and off with the car.

86 goes to ground

30 goes to ground

and 87 goes to one end of the switch

and that white wire to the other end of the switch.

Cool. Can I just use a SPDT relay and just omit 87A?

i'm not understanding this mod completely...So what this mod does is that it completes the circuit for the fogs. But it completes it by providing the ground? For some reason i would have thought that the possitive current would have been the one that is shut down to make the lights turn off. Is it really that simple?

Question, what happens when you hit the stock fog light switch?
what did you do with the other end of the white wire? Just sealed it?

Yup thats what I thought too. Then I went back to the original thread about the mod, and somebody mentioned that we were just connecting the ground of the fogs and the ground of the parking lights. The thing is I was lazy so I was'nt gonna put in the switch.

What happened was, when I wired everything without the switch, the fogs would come on when the car is off, but they would turn off when I started the car, so I started messing with the 2 other wires from the fog light relay with the switch installed, but still no go. I was initially tapping the ACC wire, then I tapped the ground of the lighter and everything worked.

Question, what happens when you hit the stock fog light switch?

Nothing happens when you hit the stock switch. And the other end of the white wire is taped off.

I think I maybe able to wire this using the stock switch. I think I may have to use another relay since the stock switch is a momentary switch. I'll try this when I get a chance and report and progress.

Yeah just give me a call. You will need a SPDT relay and a socket for the relay if possible and a switch and some extra strips of wires. If you just want the fogs to come on with the parking lights, you wont need the relay or the switch.

PM me for my number.

Being how devgrp stated that there are only three wires, you are definately looking at the wrong relay. Look at the diagram on the fuse box cover...there should be a half circle with three waivy lines next to it. That's the corresponding position for the fog light relay.

it is the one next to the large gray box, on the side closest to the battery and in the position closest to the front of the car.

pinoyesv6
07-23-2006, 10:17 PM
ok i opened up the fsm and read through it.

let me start off with this picture

http://k-lanandreajoy.net/cgi-bin/frelay.JPG

this picture shows the location of the relay in the 99-01 models but more importantly, it shows that the relay has 4 terminals. 1, 3, 4 and 5. notice the pin diagram on the relay. keep that in your head.

now here's the wiring diagram for the relay.

http://k-lanandreajoy.net/cgi-bin/fwiring.JPG

notice i circled the 1,3 4 and 5. it might look like there's 3 wires since 1 and 4 come from the same place. but yea, don't mess with that.

you'll be messing with the wire that is marked 3. this wire goes to the ecu. when you turn on the fog lights, the ecu grounds the wire marked 3.

but yea, back to the tutorial. take that wire marked 3 and cut it. now you have two wires. the wire that goes into the relay. thats the one you connect to a switch and ground.
