The latest round of crash tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) puts the new 2005 Volkswagen Jetta and carryover models of the Honda Accord and Mitsubishi Galant at the top of its rankings for front- and side-impact crashes. The industry-funded research group tested 15 mid-size vehicles with bases prices less than $21,000, and in general, those outfitted with side airbags performed best, including the Jetta, which has standard side-impact airbags. Receiving a ranking of "poor" were the Suzuki Verona, the Hyundai Sonata, the Kia Optima, the Saturn L Series, the Dodge Stratus, the Chrysler Sebring, the Mazda 6, the Toyota Camry without side airbags, the Chevrolet Malibu, and the Nissan Altima; the Sonata, Optima and L-Series received the low ranking in spite of standard side airbags. A second Camry with side airbags got a "good" score. In frontal tests, the 6, Camry, Malibu and Altima received good rankings.
