is the paint chipping, peeling or is it just turning white? have u used any chemicals on your paint or something like that. is the paint turning white or is there some white stuff covering it up.

my suggestion is to check out a body shop and a detailing shop to see if they can figure out whats going wrong and if your paint can still be saved

My door handles started doing it at like 35K. It happens most when the car is cold and wet. It's like defective clearcoat or something. I didn't do anything. My car is the 99 beige/gold color - it doesn't show up that much. If you are still under warrantee - get it in there - its covered.

The warranty on the paint is like 100k miles or 10 years isn't it? Mitsu should buy that! On a side note a buddy (who's an engineer) and I were talking about colors and which ones hold up best under ultraviolet conditions. He was saying red was the least able to handle the harsh conditions... for what that's worth...

I have the same problem. I noticed it one day after washing the car. I have the gold champaigne color for the 2000 I4's. If the paint really is covered for that long if I'm the second owner of the car would the warranty roll over to me. Because those little white dots all over my handles really piss me off. At first I though it might be water spots from not drying it good then I washed my car like three more times and nothing those little dots are still there. But please people let me know about this warranty thing.

the big paint warranty is for rust thru i recall...

as for Big H Killa's problem, i had that too. i think its like from washing my car with some hard water .u know that stuff u find on the shower door. well i just hit up the car with the zymol and all gone

What is Zymol and is it like the Mother's Clay Bar. Cause if it is I was gonna buy it this weekend to see what kinda shit I can pull off my car.

clay bar is good to use with zymol. uhm zymol is a cleaner wax. its gives a high gloss shine to your car. its more seen as a show wax since many show cars use it

It's not one of those wax's that cost like 150 bucks for a small handfull is it

i can see people paying that much money. i mean i've seen paint jobs that run over 30 thousand dollars. and well, i ain't gonna ruin my 30 thousand dolalr paint job with not damn car wax that you picked up at the dollar store.

Hey guys, I also found out this matter too appearing on my galant's rear view mirror housing, door handle. I have no clue what caused this white spot appearance. It doesn't seems like acid rain , cuz the surface seems still with clear coat on it. I believe there might be something wrong with the addictive or prime or even the paint on the mirror causing the chamical reaction. I guess there is nothing I can use to get rid of it right??
BTW, here is what it looks like on my galant :x

Ewww... :alien: Crop circles.

Did you accidentally spray something on it and not realize? Or perhaps something leaked on it where you parked?

1) I once had some Castro Super Clean in an empty Maguires bottle and I sprayed this crap all over the hood of my car a few days after I bought the Galant. It immediately hazed over so I sprayed more, thinking this was the haze I needed to wipe off. It got worse. I opened the bottle and saw the familiar purple liquid and I knew I had made a mistake. I immediatley applied NU Finish on the hood and the shine came back. I've had no problems since. Castro Super Clean can strip paint. I was lucky.

2) In the underground parking at my job, when it rains, the roof of the parking garage leaks and it combines with the white paint and drips on cars. Several cars were damaged. It looked just like your mirror, Manus.

pinoyesv6
10-16-2002, 01:29 AM
ok guys i talked to manus earlier and this is what he told me.

well first of all, he used meguir's cleaner wax on it, it didn't come off.

secondly well, i think it has something to do with the weather in that region. osiris612 is in NY, manus is right next door in NJ and manus was tellign me how his friend's with mitsu has the same problem recently...so im thinking some kind of chemical reaction due to the weather.

BGR

Is it all over his car or just the mirror? That's frickin' crazy.

Give Nu Finish a try. Seem like I'm talking to myself about this shit.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(BGR)</div><div class='quotemain'>Is it all over his car or just the mirror? Â*That's frickin' crazy.</div>

its on his mirror and some of his door handles. those are plastic pieces, maybe the primer or something special they might have used to paint those pieces cuz its plastic or maybe a chemical reaction because of the plastic i dunno. he said its not on the trim the gas lid, the bumper covers and a door handle or two but who knows that the future can bring

o yea manus thinks its coming from the inside cuz he said his clear coat looks fine. so im guessing car wax or whatever won't really work cuz the clear coat is still good. so he says

my mirrors are lookin exactly the same, i have tried a rubbing compound and nu finish, NOTHING! i have called the dealership and they can't seem to give me an answer so i am going to bring it to them in a few days and see if they can replace everything or fix the problem.
Question have you guys brought your cars to car washes, my boss thinks it could be the detergent they use...

BGR

All the time. I rarely hand wash my car now. I use the brushless car washes at Chevron or Shell gas stations.

This is definitely not because of anything we've done. I also have the gold/champagne color and live in CT and I have it on the door handles. The illustration of the Mirror above is pretty close - it's a milky spotting that is under the clearcoat. It is a factory defect associated with the process they use to paint the small parts that arent painted with the rest of the larger body parts (why the plastic bumpers don't seem to be affected). I'll bet there is something materially different happening with these small painted parts.

Those spots are the exact spots that are on my door handle and rearview mirrors to. But for some reason it seems to stand out more after it's done raining or I wet the car. When the car is dry it's harder to see. And Like I said I have the Gold Champagne color also and mine is a 2000 and i live in Florida. I think we should go to mitsu and complain and complain till they make it a recall.

Hey Big H Killa , I think we should having a survey going on about this matter, to see how many ppl in TGC having the same problem on their galant. YET, this paint matter also found on 3g eclipses as well. But, chance of recall is really low, cuz its not really matter to mechanical or safety matter. Well i still try to find some solution to fix up this thing or else i will get it to shop and repaint it.

Question Â*have you guys brought your cars to car washes, my boss thinks it could be the detergent they use...</div> I don't think thatz the detergent tho, cuz i never bring it to the car wash to get my car washed. I don't want to have scratch all over the place. Well I do hand wash every twice a week, and use Meguiar's Detailer Mist for in between wash. Wax with Meguiar's Cleaner Wax every 2 months . I got no problem with the paint until recently FoxxyLady89 called me regarding this matter. Its so ironic that I have the same problem as her galant. I believe it could be on any color of galant too. Guys please tell me what color of galant you got having the same problem to conclude if that affect all the available color.
I think we should take some action regarding this matter, cuz dealership won't take it back for repaint. [size=18]<span style='color:red'>LET THE MITSUBISHIT KNOW!!!!!</span>

Ok like I said I have the same problem and mine is a Gold color. I know it's not the detergent from a gas station car wash b/c I hand was my car with Meguires wet shine car wash shit so it's definetly not the detergent.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the weather that's causing that kind of chemical reaction to your mirror housing. Just hope Mitsubishi dealership does something about it. Perhaps replace the mirror housing or something.

Big H Killa I have already done some complaining to Mitsu about mine.
1) i called Mistubishi USA and complained to the vehicle assistance people and set up a claim with them. They wanted me to set up an appt with them so a rep could come look at my car( i didn't do it yet bc i can't get a day off of work) I think that if enuff of us call and complain about this they might do something about a recall bc if enuff people call and complain they will obviously notice soemthing is wrong. call 1-888-648-7820 and talk to the Vehicle Assistance dept. my claim number is 316051 incase you want to reference that.

2)
i went to a body shop and the guy there told me what is making the cars do this. When the mirrors and door handles are being prepped for painting they aren't properly stripped of there oils. so in the heat or cold whichever, the oils seep out coming to the top causing the white spots.
to fix the problem the handles and mirrors have to be removed and stripped all the way and prepped and repainted

thats what i got

Alright I just got off the phone with Mitsubishi about this and they told me that they aren't gonna do anything about it b/c i'm the second owner of my car and b/c my warranty for the paint is up so I told them I was part of a car club called The Galant Center and I said that I will have all the members from car club with this problem call up and complain until you fix it. Then I told them this is my first Mitsubishi and if this is gonna cause a problem I will never buy another Mitsu again and I told them I know plenty of people that will never buy them again if they don't wanna fix it and they told me to do what I need to do.

My claim number is 316150. Everyone please call up and complain about this so we can show Mitsubishi who's boss. It's us that make them so big not them.

I was going to guess it was acid rain problem or something but sounds like it was a bad batch of gold paint on factory line? Everyone who has had this problem has a gold car or did I read it wrong....

according to osiris612 its because the pieces weren't prepped properly before they were painted. uhm this isn't just for the beige colored cars either, i've read it happeneing to other cars too.

Big H Killa
10-17-2002, 02:58 PM
Well it's not that's it's the gold paint it's the way the cleaned the door handles and the side view mirrors. It just happens to be on alot of the gold cars. But everyone please call up mitsubishi and start compaining.

my car is red and i have the problem too ( the original poster) BigH whats is your paint warranty? i thought they were 10yr warranties? they wont replace anything bc they are still fully functional. they would have to remove everything and strip them down and start over a long process that most likely wont be free unless enuff people call and complain and then maybe!!!

The lady I talked to at mitsubishi said all Mitsu Paint Warranty's are only 3 years. I told I'm gonna get them to do it for free one way or another and I will. I don't care if I have to bug them everyday for the next year to get them to do it but I most certantly will get them to.

I have a patriot red 2K galant.. and last week i noticed some white marks.. almost like dried-up rain drops on both of my mirrors, and the two driver side dor handles. i brought it to the dealer and he had told me that it was clearly a reaction to the cleanser and wax i have been using on the car and there is nothing that Mitubishi could do about it.. they also said that they have never seen anything like it before. the next day i was speaking to a friend that has an '01 red eclipse. she had told me that she too had some spots on her handles.. so i took a look and it was identical to my car.. she brought her car to the same dealer as i did and they said they had seen one other case.. on a GALANT.. so they tried using a heat gun on the paint, thinking it was the weather .. a reaction to the changing weather.. the heat gun worked!!! they told her it was a defect in how they painted the car at the factory.. so well i just had my air bubbles taken out today.. by my friend who is a mechanic.. free of charge. he said that an ordinary hair dryer would work too..
GOOD LUCK!! let me know how it goes..

I wasn't trying to be funny.

What's funny is a girl that never posted before on TGC submits her first post with an answer to a problem that some of you (TGC Veteran's with the same problem) didn't even know. I know I'm humbled. I wish more visitors would post like this and not be all silent and shit.
