Diagnostic Trouble Code

When you car has a problem, and the "Check Engine" light goes off, the car will self diagnose itself and return a certain error code in relation to the problem.

It simply clears the code and in turn makes the CEL go away.

yeah I tried it on mine and the cruse light never came on. Someone else should try it though if they have a 7G.

Just a quick question about this. I got the cruise light to flash, but on part 3 where it says release brake pedal and auto cruise control, does that just mean to click the button and turn it off? I tried that once and it didn't work but i am going to try again after typing this. Thanks.

Since i don't have cruise control i can't tell you anything, but let us know how it works out.

anyone with a 7g tried this yet, any good results??

hsinya

when you get to part 3 you're still holding down the brake pedal and still pushing down on the cruise control lever. (the entire lever not the on/off button).

at part 3 u release both the pedal and the level.

this does work, and only works for the 8g. however, some trouble codes return after they have been reset. for example the auto tranny codes that come on from the maual swap. i think it only resets minor codes. if you do it right and the SES light is still on, you have a major problem with the engine and should check the light with a scan tool.

Thanks for clearing that up. I tried again, got the cruise light to flash and everything, but the engine light stays on. When I had my codes pulled about two months ago, the mechanic said it was a rear o2 sensor, to keep driving it and it will eventually clear itself. This is considered a minor code, right?

u can clear it with a datalogger.. otherwise goto auto zone or discount auto or one of those autoparts stores and have them check and clear the code. They let u use the tool for free or they will do it for u and after u find the code u have the option to clear it which removes the light..

I just tried this, following the directions exactly, and it didn't work for me at first. In step 3, it says to release the brake pedal and cruise control switch, then turn the ignition to OFF. When this didn't work for me, I tried it again, but this time I held the brake down and the cruise control on SET while turning the ignition to OFF, and that clearded the SES light.

are you suppose to hold the brake pedal the whole time as it says depress the brake pedal

Wouldn't it clear the code for a quick sec. but if the problem is still there the CEL should come back? This might only work if you have all ready fixed the problem and then clear it if it doesn't go away by itself.

Can someone post the steps to do this? For some reason I can't see them...

wetamup2k3g

Step one: Pop the hood

Step two: pull the negative battery cable off the battery terminal

Step three: wait a minute or two, or ten, or whatever

Step four: reinstall the cable back on the battery

Step five: start your car and hope for the best

LOL

Seriously, if the condition that existed to turn on the CEL no longer exists at the moment you restart the car, the light won't come on. If it still does, then it needs to be done proper like and get it scanned. I never understood the reasoning behind clearing the light without using a scantool. If you repaired the fault, after five start/stop cycles, the light will go off on its own anyway. Scanners are cheap nowadays too. Plus, Autozone/Advanced Auto Parts will scan your car for you for free. But if you really need to clear the light, just undo the battery and wait a while, but you have to drive it for a good while to get the emissions monitors ready if you need to pass emissions. Sorry if I'm rambling on, I'm high on painkillers right now.

All you do is disconnect the negative battery cable for some time, I would say one minute but it could be up to thirty I don't know. But then you hook it back up and see if code comes back. I think one minute is fine, you can always drive to.any car auto parts place and have it erased for free.
