Well it’s my time, after long considerations of whether to do the swap or not I have decided to convert to a 5 speed transmission. I will update this thread and make a detailed tutorial as I move along. So let’s begin…

Part 1: The Arrival
After waiting for a week for the junkyard to send this out I finally got it today. In the box came stock flywheel, clutch, master/slave clutch cylinders, clutch/break pedals, 2 shifter assemblies and a lot of bolts.

I'm going to try to install the pedals and the master/slave cylinders this Friday if the weather permits it, as for the actual conversion will take place on Janury 7th.

Part 2: Pedals & Master/Slave Clutch Cylinders
Everythis is still on schedule and I have finished installing clutch and break pedals.

http://www.vertsoft.com/roman/8g5spdswap/PEDALS/PEDALS004_SMALL.jpg

Things would have moved a lot quicker except that I had to relocate my 4AWG cable for the system. Dam install guy picked a great spot to run it.

We had to dremel out the master cylinder plate and everything fit like a glove.

COMPATIBILITY
1999-2000: NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, NO PROBLEM
2001: REQUIRES A 2000 AUTO ECU/IMMOBILIZER WHICH YOU NEED TO GET REINITIALIZED AT THE DEALER IN ORDER TO GET RID OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT
2002-2003: SPEED SENSOR REWIRING IS REQUIRED, STILL UNABLE TO GET RID OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

2002 ECU IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH 2001, 2000, 1999 ECUS.

CONNECT PIN 5(BLK/YEL) + 8(BLK/BLU) TO START THE CAR

CONNECT PIN 7(RED/GRN) + 6(RED/BLU) TO TRIGGER THE REVERSE LIGHTS

Use the 2pin connector on top of the tranny to connect the 6+7 that should be your reverse gear selenoid. Other then that you should b all set.

Every Eclipse from 01-05 are going to be the same. As far as the axles, ABS or Not you can use either of the two. although with the V6 the axles are the same. I didn't realize it until I had taken mine apart. Don't get confused if you have a pair of Eclipse axles with splines on the hub-end. Those are for the ABS models, which the ABS system on the Eclipse is completely different thatn the Galant. Just take a flat tip screw drive and rubber hammer and nock the splined ring off. It should pop off fairly easy.

as of now there is no known way to get rid of the light unfortunatelly, the 02 and 03 ecu's are different then the previous versions and cant be swapped between each other, basically the ecu i reading that there is no tranny connected to the car, it will run fine but if you live in a state that requires an inspection you will not pass

My passenger side axel is not lining up right. It seems to be about 1/4 inch too long. the only way it will go in is to unbolt the tranny, but when you do that and tighten the trans back up it seems to want to bind on the bearings.

turn the wheel as hard as you can and just play with it it will go in, its common on the 4cyl and the v6 is a bit harder but it will fit in fine just jiggle it around

I loosened the transmission from the engine, then bolted the hanger to the block then bolted the trans back up, that worked fine. I'm almost done, it will be running tonight.

I have a 03 4cyl. ES do I need the pass side axle?? or is it only for the V6'ers, and do I need the crossmember as well or no?

I've done all the research a year ago and have the parts list from then and haven't gotten to do the swap and looking through this tutorial it doesn't mention anything of that nature and now I'm hearing some of you's (i.e 6g72.. an so on) talking about the axle... so just curious..

this might a stupid question but i have to be sure, is there a year limit for the donor car or anything from 00-05 ??? also i need to get it from a 4cyl eclipse not a v6, right ??

the reason im asking is cuz the guy at the junk yaard said that the tranny is the same from beginning of 00 all the way to 06/01 and then something changes but i wanna make sure before i go asking for any tranny

thanks

That Im not sure since people dont wan to help out with that. I have asked that question here, 3g and galant forums and everyone kinda gets silent like it's a big secret. This is a question that is not covered anywhere. I've been told that 00-02 3g transmissions are one way and 03-05 another, then some say that all 3G manual transmissions for Gs/Rs models are the same. So I couldn't tell you for sure. Let me know if you do find out for sure.

Please help me and email me what kind of tranny is it? and list all the parts that i need because im really interested in doing the swap. good news, diamante automatic engine mounts are the same as the manual, so no need to use any of the eclipse mounts. Pedals are different, shifter assembly is different on the diamante, but you may be able to bolt the eclipse one in place. Good luck!!

well someone over seas has done the swap to their diamante but i guess ill be the first one in america to do so pretty soon. Slave cylinder, master cylinder, tranny, shifter, shifter linkage, clutch....and is the flywheel the same for the 72 and 74?

HondaKillerGTZ
02-21-2009, 11:39 AM
You can use 3G eclipse V6 parts, all the parts will fit your 6G74, including flywheel, clutch, shifter linkage, but you will need to get the pedals for a LHD diamante/magna. The shifter assembly is different also, but I think it could be installed in your car. I will post some screen shots of all the parts so you can see the differences. Also, you can check AussieMagna.com (http://www.aussiemagna.com/)

if you use the 3g stuff you need both the clutch and flywheel from a 3g. your stock starter will work.
if you use a 2g flywheel you need a 2g clutch along with the starter

the benefit of using the 2g stuff when he did his swap was it was cheaper overall for the upgraded components and there was more variety available. plus swapping out a new starter isnt a bad idea when everything is out of the car...

Johnathansgalant

4g63lover
12-06-2009, 09:18 PM
The washers are there to keep the bolts from digging into the flywheel and destroying it but we dont have enough HP to actually get the flywheel and bolts hot enough to do that. Atleast thats how I understand it.

Also, when buying a 3G flywheel, make sure it's an OEM flywheel. Remanufactured and aftermarket flywheels will need the 2G bolts. As soon as this clutch goes out I'm going to a lightened 2G flywheel cuz this fucker is heavy...

If you have an 01+ (and some 00 ECUS depending on processor inside), you can flash the ECU with a Tactrix cable and ECUFlash and simply disable the immobilizer on our ECUs rather than buying another one that has already been disabled. THose of you with 00 Gs may be able to flash the ECU like I said depending on the processor it has, but for those of you wanting to upgrade to the flashable ECU I would suggest an 01+

for my 99 V6, I had to disconnect the speed sensor conversion harness. You'll know once you start plugging things back in. The conversion harness most likely won't match the ECU harness at all, whereas once you take it off, that plug will match it

only 02-03 models need a full speed sensor harness to wire into the cluster. 00-01's have them built into the engine harness.

I was looking at this, the 03 auto trans has a speed sensor on top of the trans, the plug on that looks similar to the plug for the speed sensor for the m/t but the wire isnt long enough, I havent tried yet cuz I dont have the speed sensor yet hehe :D

You sure you are looking at the right plug? The speed sensor for the auto/manual tranny is on the diff housing, and is not on top.

I have a few questions if the transmission code is F5m42 that means we could get it from any car with this code transmission?? I did some research and the mirage and the lancer(just lancer not evo) both have the same transmission Does that mean we could use them??? And the eclipse transmission has this 1st and 2nd synchro rings are multi-piece design what does it mean?? And is it a possibility to have a taller fifth gear put in than the .767??

Someone is going to have to PHYSICALLY check this out. I thought the Lancer transmissions bellhousing doesnt match the 4G64 block? For the synchros, I'm guessing it's got multiple pieces.

ha...no he used a 3g one (both times) i know since i had to bail him out twice with the install lol... he tried using the cable brackets from an evo if thats what your thinking lol....it restricted cable movement though and didnt let him go in certain gears...

for the v6 guys though if you use the tranny from a gts rather then a gt it has a taller 5th gear

you have two bolts on the firewall, and then 2 bolts up top underneather your dash pretty much.... but you will have to buy those 2, and the bolts that come with the master, are the same thread and pitch as the ones that go underneath the dash, 15mm long thats what i got.. fit perfect...

clutch pedal/master cylinder question...

so i went to mount it all up today but while i was in the process i realized that the rod coming out of the mc where the bracket connects to the pedal doesnt give the pedal much play from the floor...in fact only about 2-3 inches max...i was wondering if anybody else has encountered this problem, i fucked with the thing for about an hour and couldnt really make much adjustment, the pedals still practically resting on the floor... Both parts are from 3g eclipses so i dont know what the problem is or if im doing something wrong, can it be adjusted?? The only thing i can think to do is extend the rod on the mc if not...if anybodys got any ideas about this please let me know

you need to fix your IMG code, but I'm pretty sure those are the right parts
If the MC is from a 3G, you should have enough floor clearance. Are you sure you're extending the rod out all the way? Also are you sure that the pedal isn't just falling to the floor since there's no hydraulic pressure

V6 or 4 cylinder, doesn't matter. As long as the donor car has the correct transmission.

The Dodge Stratus R/T Coupe and Chrysler Sebring LXi Coupe both have the F5M51 Transmission used for the V6 5-speed swap.

The 4 cylinder guys can also get a 5-speed transmission from the Dodge Stratus SXT Coupe and Chrysler Sebring LX Coupe.

supposedly the Acura Integra boot fits; however people said that the 3000gt boot fits too, and I bought one and it was too skinny, so I would double check with some people. HungarianHunter was making custom shift boots for the Galant a little while back. I PM'd him about making one, but his sewing machine was out of service. It might be fixed again, but I have no idea. basically, you short the wires to make the ecu think its in nuetral... so it will start, because in a auto the car whille only start in park and nuetral.... and for the plugs if you have a 99-01 you won't use the plug that goes to the soleniods....

you really should Ismas, it breathed new life into my G, it was hard back breaking labor doing it myself in the driveway, but it was worth it, even the Rotator Cuff injury from taking out the damned bolts for the shifter cable, i get better gas milage, it's more fun to drive. if for ANY other reason, if you have the ablity and the $$$$, you should do it for the added gas mileage. I'm saving about $8 a week in gas so in a year the swap will have nearly payed for it self just in gas mileage, and that's not including when I go turbo how much MORE fun it will be to drive.
