I Photoshopped this picture a little bit to give you a rough idea of what I want to do to my taillights. I think it might look good if I do a good and clean enough job. My real question is, though, if I do this, and it turns out to be DISGUSTING, can I use paint-thinner and get all the spraypaint off, without ruining the taillight assembly? Like, if I use paint-thinner on it and get all the silver paint off, will the red lens on the light be marked and messed up?

I have this can of paint that matches my car's color fairly well, and I feel this might be a nice, cheap mod to set my car even more unique against all other 7G's.

I like unique, but I don't like gross. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Whatchya think?

we have this black 7g that used to run around campus that looked like that. it looked awful i didn't like it so much that i didnt' even bother telling the owners about tgc.

but yea, the best way i found to remove the paint is just to spray the tails with brake cleaner and let that remove the paint. the tails will have a slight haze to them so you'll have to polish the tails similar to like you would your headlights when they become cloudy.

Maybe doesn't help me!! https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

I know my cheap Photoshop job doesn't help much, but it gives you the idea of what I'm talking about. When I look at the back of my car, and try to imagine that part of the tails painted, I can vision it looking somewhat good. That's why I ask about the paint-thinner, because if the thinner won't harm the lights, I'll do it and not have to worry about it looking bad, because I can always remove it.

Anyone ever try this, and use thinner to remove the paint?

EDIT: Did that 7G do his lights exactly like that, or was it somewhat similar?

Ok, so if I do this, and it turns out looking absolutely horrific, I should just use brake cleaner on it? Can I just use paint thinner? I don't think I have any brake cleaner.

Also, you said it's going to leave it all cloudy and such. I have that headlight cleaner stuff comming in the mail, should that help it? Probably...

I don't like it, but try shaving the trunk first.

Um...no :? Try night shade or get them candy red. Wait, the bottom is clear on those? I'd get rid of the ones on the trunk and keep the outers by them selves

Hrm, I'm not too into shaved trunks, I think they look kind of ricey. Tell ya what, if the paint is easy enough to remove afterwards, I'll do it anyway just to see how it really would look. If the paint is going to be a bitch to get off, and will fuck up the lights, I'll just forget the whole thing.

Guys, maybe I'm misunderstanding. What exactly is it that you mean when you say 'shaved trunk'?

I'm under the impression this means take off all the emblems and patch the holes. If so, I'd rather just swap the ones I have for some j-spec emblems like a 'MMC' emblem instead of the 'Mistubishi' and maybe different letters than 'ES'. Falsely badging my car as a 'VX-R' might be pushing it, though https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

i wouldnt do it, if your just painting part of the trunk tails body color, plus you would need a few coats and even with 2 or more coats light will shine through.

I say leave them the way they are the 97/98 tails look awsome the way they are.

But if you do try it and screw up your tails i have a spare set of the trunk tails that i wanted to use for an LED project that i can let go for cheap if you really need it, i just have the 'inner' set i do not have the outer set (the ones on the quarter panel).

also the idea of painting your tails body color has been done on a 7g. It was a Beige 7g the tails were body color exept for the mitsu logo.

Edit: shave off the emblems its looks 10 times cleaner with out it. I took of mustu and ES and i liked it then about a month later i took off galant too.

Not on the back there glued on, we have the trunk key hole in the exact middle. but i beliave the front emblem has the two holes.

Well, as far as light shining through, I'd probably take the bulbs out if I did this. It would be pretty useless to leave them in https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

Also, yeah, I might just try it, and if I hate it I'll try to remove the paint. If the lights get fucked up, these are easy to come by, and now you even said you have a spare set which is more reason to do it.

I dunno, I'm just kind of obsessed with having things that no one else has. I like being unique, and so far I haven't seen anyone who has done their tails in this fashion. This would set my G off from most other 7G's, that's for sure, but I want it to look really good, too https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

Roger that.

About the back emblems, though. If I just like, heat them up with a hair dryer or something, I could just peel them off with no damage to the car?

It'll be alot easier if you heat them up a little since we don't have nice hot sunny days, but you dont have to. Get some fishing line or dentel floss, put it behind the emblem and move side to side and it will peel right off, then grab some goo be gone and get rid of the residue from the glue. when its all gone put some wax on cause it'll be the first time that peice has seen the light of day.

I'll shave the ES. Then, based on the wickedness of it all, I'll shave the Mitsubishi too.

I would really like to have a MMC emblem though.
