View Full Version : "Thunking" from rear suspension

Everytime I go over rough road or hit a bump, there is a "thunking" sound coming from the rear of the car. At first I thought it was the spare bouncing around but then I completely emptied the trunk and the same thing kept happening.

Took the rear wheels off and did a visual inspection and didn't note anything wrong. I cannot tell which side the sound is coming from either.

Any ideas? Bad struts / strut tower?

Thanks!

Could be your struts or strut mounts

I suspected that might be the case. Any idea how much something like costs to fix?

Rear struts, strut mounts, labor and alignment $400-500 depending on the shop. You would want to do the front struts with that so expect $700-800. At a shop at least, obviously less if you are a do-it-yourselfer.

just take it apart and have a look. could be only ur bushings. but make sure. struts could be pricy.

Devgrp had that problem earlier. Here's a link

Yikes! Pretty expensive stuff. I think I'll do some more investigation.

Hopefully the weather will improve. Not looking forward to pulling things apart when it's 30 degrees. I'll give an update as to what I find out.

Thanks!

Ha! Not in Cleveland it isn't... https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif

The cold is hell on the engine and it's a constant battle to keep things from rotting from all the road salt.

Then there's the crappy roads. More holes than surface. I'll bet that's what caused whatever the "thunking" is. Last year I bent and cracked a rim. Snow filled crater -- invisible but nearly knocked my fillings out when I hit it. Ouch.

Beyond that though, the car gets all the regular maintenance which is pretty cheap.
