I was wondering exactly how many gallons the fuel tank is on the 99-03 Galant? Usually i fill up when i see my gas light, but for some reason i can only fill up with about 12-14 gallons. I thought the tank was supposed to hold 16 gallons? At what point does the gas light come on? Does it come on with 2 gallons in reserve?

2 things you should remember.

the pickup for the fuel gauge doesn't slosh around at the bottom. so what little you have left in the bottom might not get read by the pickup.

the gas light means that you are low on gas, not you've run out of gas. so if you want to get closer to that 16 gallons, for some reason, just drive the car until it just stops cuz its out of fuel

I've heard it's not good to let the tank get real empty before you refill, cuz it increases the chances of pulling sludge from the bottom of the tank into the system and clogging up the fuel filter.

I thought the tank was only ~14.

Either way yeah, especially in the winter, I have heard that if you let the car run out of gas, you can get some water in your fuel lines. Which could freeze in the winter.

if you guys have sludge in your tank i'm sorry for you.

my tank has no sludge.

my fuel pump has a pre filter bag on it and when i swapped my stocker out for a walbro 255lph HP pump, there wasn't a sign of debris on it.
my fuel filter had crap in it, but only after over 100k of filtering impurityies out of fuel.

You shouldn't let your tank get low mainly for safety,

In the even tthat there was a nationwide crisis and you needed to flee in your vehicle, it would suck to only have 1.2 gallons in your tank. lol.
never let it go below 1/4 tank.

i like to let my tank get low however so that when i fill up, i have a tank full of fresh fuel.

Yeh, thanks for the advice...but im not too concerned with my injectors and shit getting clogged. Ive been adding Seafoam to a full tank every month. So im not too concerned about clogging my injectors. Plus its much more easier to watch my mileage when i fill it up, instead of adding $10 here and there at all these different stations. Ive also been monitoring my fuel economy too. So far ive gotten 274.6 city miles with Getty gasonline (91 Octane). And about 280 city miles with Mobil 93 Octane gasoline. If i fill up before i drive from Watervliet to Brooklyn....i get about 345 miles going there and back. 8)

Its for reserve. The low gas light goes on with 2 gallons of fuel left. That way your not stuck on the side of the highway walking to a gas station two miles down the road at 3:00am.
