View Full Version : How much longer should my stock shocks last?

I have about 19k miles on my 01. I'm planning to drop it on Teins, can't afford coil overs or anything. So I'm wondering if I drive an average 3000 miles a year, will those struts last me a few more years? Do they age from time?

I don't want to put on the springs then have the struts go and end up spending more money.

thx

You should be....eh....ok for a couple about 2k. Most manufacturers reccomend that you replace your struts every 25-30k miles. It would probably be a good idea to just purchase some struts to go with your new springs. Choose an aftermarket variant like KYB AGX'S. I ve run the GR-2s before but not on this car. Tokico makes a quality strut also but again I have no experience with either of these on the 8G.

lol I got 82k and I've never replaced my struts. they are starting to go, I've done some rough driving the last 2 years and I can feel them bouncing.

You will be okay for a while, over time you will start to feel the ride quality start to decrease on the stock struts/shocks. I had about 25-27k miles on the car then I added some 1.8in springs and I drove around on them untill I couldn't take how they felt any more. My stock struts and shocks didnt go out its just that I didn't like how the ride felt over time, the springs were on about a year. I think you will be okay for a good amount of time being that the tein springs don't offer to servere of a drop and your only around 19k miles.

if you're gonna install them yourself you can go ahead and put them on. when u blow out your shocks, you should have enough money saved up to get new ones.

if you're gonna get a shop to do it, save yourself some money and just wait til you have some new shocks and struts. i mean if you do things seperate now, you'll have to pay the shop one time to install the springs and then pay them again to install the struts and shocks. and yea the shocks and struts can cost just as much as the labor.

I just blew a right side shock last week.. Its ironic cause i buy the struts from someone here and I blew one. Mine when it went out you heard it. When i hit a bump it sounded like something was bumping hard under the wheel.. I have 53k on mine...

I went with the KYB AGX gas and the teins springs, both bought from members here. I have my own shop so labor was free on installs.. took me about 1 hr to change all around..

Im need to get allignement and I should be good to go.. My car rides better now that it EVER has.. no more 65 MPH bump...I love it...

I'm throwing on some Teins myself, not a big difference in situation. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

Plus KYB AGX's are cheap! www.dynamicturbo.com and search for Galants and suspension. They go for about 140 the whole thing, front and back

dude check your prices, i think that is the price for 1 or 2 not all 4... if it was $140 for all 4 that would b the deal of the century.

From what I could find they don't sell agx's for the g. The gr2's come out to just under 300 for all 4 though.

8gs use the same shocks as the 3g. They make AGX for the 3g. They make AGX for the 7g as well.

your stock shox should last you 1 year with teins on. only my right front strut is bad but thats because i hit so many potholes with it. dinged the rim and popped 2 tires. if you avoid potholes or drive slow, then they should last you longer.

Well that cancels it for me. I had better start looking for struts https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

I have had an Eibach pro kit on my stock struts for almost 2 years now no problems.

The Eibach kit doesnt require as much travel as springs with a 2" or more drop. Its only an inch, right?

Well my Eibachs are cut so I have about a 2" drop https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

yeah, as others said, i think it'll be best to just replace both at the same time. cost-wise anyways. efficiency is key

I apologize you guys, yeah it's a good 300.00 dollars for the whole set. It's just when I went to check it out last week they had the front and back, but not the left and the right, so I thought it was a set of two for the front, and two for the back. My bad citizens!

Im sure his are probably leaking at this point. :? My Gr2's barely heald up to the intrax I had on my 323, but thats a different story. 8)

Idk I have AGX up front now but still riding the stock in the rear lol. No leaking from my knowledge. The 7g weighs less then the 8g and I dont have a system at all either.

Monroe recommends replacement every 50k regardless of application. Every vehicle should have its struts/shocks replaced regularly for improved steering, stopping, and stability.

At 20,000 miles the stock struts should be good enough to use with dropped coil springs. Though it is a great opportunity to get performance struts like the KYB AGXs.

For general information a performance strut (like the AGX) is designed with lowered ride height in mind, stock struts aren't. When lowered you reduce (or even eliminate) the usefulness of the stock strut. Basically their is a useable range of travel that a strut needs to stay within.

Just changed the shocks on my 2000 ES.

90100 miles.

changed the shocks and shock mounts all at once. Much more stable at higher speeds now. ... now i need to change the sway bar end links.
