Well I've done this about four times now and I've never seen a tute on this so since I had to do this again today to eliminate the damn belt squeak I decided to take pics & make a tutorial.

DISCLAIMER: Some mechanical knowledge is required to do this. If you doubt your skills do not do this. I am not responsible for any damage to either you or your car.
This is for the I4

Step 1: Jack up the passenger side of you car & support it with jack stands. Make sure that you break the lugs before you jack it up. Don't remove them just break them so that you can remove them later.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y190/Skylineg1/otherpictures017.jpg

Step 2: After removing the wheel remove the belt guard that protects them. There are three bolts on the top of it & also three of those stupid plastic washer screws. Remove those also.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y190/Skylineg1/otherpictures018.jpg

Step 3:You 'll first want to remove the outer belt which are the power steering & A/C belt. You do this by loosning the tensioner that is between the above mentioned units by turning the bolt.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y190/Skylineg1/otherpictures021.jpg

Step 4: Now lets remove the inner belt (the smaller one). Get under the car & loosen the nut that holds the alternator. Its the only nut on it so you shouldn't have a problem locating it.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y190/Skylineg1/otherpictures020.jpg

Now go into the engine bay & loosen the bolt. Just keep wrenching at it until the threading on the other side is just about to go into the block looking piece. You want to also loosen the small bolt that is on the little block. This allows the alternator to slide up so that you can remove & install the belt easily. Remember do not remove the two blots completely from their respective places or you'll be there a while.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y190/Skylineg1/otherpictures022.jpg

The all you have to do is the opposite of this to install the belts. Just remember that the inner belt (ALT & W/P) must go on first, then your outer belt (A/C & P/S). Don't forget to get under the car after you tighten the alternator belt & torque the bolt under the alternator to spec.

Yeah we could do it on Monday. I tried to but the rim shop said that the hub area was too big & they didn't have any rings to fit that size. I don't want the vibration any more so I'll have to wait till I'm working again to prolly buy some new ones.

If I didnt tighten the alternator belt bolt all the way would that be the reason my car squeals something fierce when I start it after it has sat and gotten cold and when it rains? This is hardcore loud ass squealing...

Yep. If you don't tighten the belt, winter will be a squel fest for you.

I have the V6, took a bit of looking the first time i changed the belts. your best bet is to take off the part of the inner fender in front of the belts, then you should be able to get in there and see the 2 tensioners. hope this helps you.

Hey guys. My belts squeek like crazy, but only for about the first 5-10 seconds of running the car, after that it's fine, but it annoys me a lot...

I checked the belt and it's not cracked at all and it's on there very tight. Sould I check the tensioner, or buy a new belt? I doubt the guy before me bought a new one recently, but there are no obvious defects.

What do you gusy think? :)

Thanks!

Sorry to bring this back up but I am going to change the belts in the next couple of weeks on Baby G and I was wondering if anyone knew the part #'s for them on rockauto. Thanks.

This thread is old, but I'd like to point out you should loosen the nut holding the tension pulley in when removing the outer belt. This way it has an easier time sliding back and forth when adjusting the tension to remove the belt. I did not loosen it by mistake and sheared the bolt that adjusted the tension. Had to go to a junkyard, find a broken 8g, and rip the part out. Hope this saves some people the headache I went through. Here's the bolt I'm talking about:

The V6 has a tensioner pulley on the alty belt that slides in a slot in a bracket. It is tensioned by a long bolt. Tried to change the belt today, loosened the pulley after a while, enough to get the belt on, tried tightening the bolt back up and broke it clean off. Don't laugh! In stead of a 10 minute fix, I now have no car! Any ideas?

does anyone know what are the proper torque specs for the power steering belt? meaning the bolt where u loosen the tension?

i can't find it on the manual i downloaded from here :/

One thing I'd add to this thread: disconnect your negative battery cable. I know it should really be done for all work, but particularly so for this one since you're working near the alternator.

Also, I didn't remove the wheel or the inner fender.
