Actually it could be dangerous if you are braindead or just rushing. If youre not careful it might go in crooked. It may look like its in all the way on the top but it may still be poking out a little on the underside. You have to use a whole lotta paitence cuz you have to keep the wrenches strait and tighten the lug nut at the same time. I would just tighten it a little then wait for a while then tighten some more all the while checking to see if it was on strait and in all the way.

stupid question...but why do you have to remove the brake rotor and caliper? wouldn't they "act" as washers and give extra thickness along with extra washers when you're tightening the new one in?

my front studs are rusting and i have new ones ready to pop in......

OMG IT LIVES! :lol:

When I was replacing a broken stud on my 5G, I had to take out the caliper and rotor to avoid getting them damaged while whacking away at the stud with my engineer's hammer (plus I needed to put on some new rotors anyway). I used several washers (they are cheap anyway, I mean come-on, its just a few dollars for a pack of 10 fender washers) and the one that was contacting the nut used to torque down the stud got destroyed. Better safe than sorry I say.
