I'm trying to get my axles out to continue with my manual tranny swap, and have come to a roadblock.

Thank god for impact wrenches - I had a hell of a trying to get the driveshaft nut off with a breaker bar, till I tried the impact wrench, which got them off in seconds.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to get the axle off - how do I get the lower control arm off?

Also, the service manual mentions a special tool to get the tie rod off:

Any trick to get it off without said tool?

BFH

to the side of the part of the knuckle that the tie rod goes through.

hit it over and over and the tie rod will pop out.
just don't hit the threads of the tie rod end.

same goes for the lower ball joint.

usually just a few decent whacks will get it out

There is a bolt at the bottom of the control arm, take it out then use a pry bar to lower the control arm, i dont think you need a special tool to get the tie rod off.

WOW. Your going thru much more troble then you need to be. The last thing you wanna be doing is messing with the tie rod and control arm. The easiest way to take the axle out, is to take the axle nut off the end, then take the 2 big bolts that hold the knuckle to the strut off, then the knuckle will just slide down and use a soft mallet to tap on the end of the axle to get it out of the hub. Its MUCH MUCH easier this way.

yes.

make sure u got something to support the entire assembly, once its loose from the strut and the axle it'll hang off the brake line.

best way is to remove 2 bolts that hold the whole arm that way you wond throw your allignment of

I actually prefer to only remove the ball joint pinch bolt on both sides.
once its out, the ball joint slides out with a little force. You can then easily twist both control arms down to an almost 90 degree angle to get them the hell outta the way.

just wondering what you're gonna do with the auto axles considering if they are good?

Want to donate it for a good cause?

I'll pay shipping

When I remove axles, I pull the hub out from the A arm, just remove the bolt and it pulls straight up/out. Then just use a rubber mallet to knock the axles through the hubs voila.

This is not the best way to do it by any means. You just need to remove the one bolt that holds the hub into that arm.

I have lived and breathed these cars for the past 5 years, I am simply offering my expertise on the subject at hand.

I'm not saying that you are wrong, i'm just saying that everyone has their own way of doing things this just happands to be mine. I've also spent way to much time on these cars in the last 2 years, in fact so much that even my girlfriend left me

This actually worked the best, as there was only one medium nut/bolt to take off rather than the two big ass bolts holding the shocks. Was able to coax the lower control arm out with a soft face BFH and the axles popped off the knuckle rather nicely https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif
