Ok..I had to read your post a few times to understand what you are trying to post :?

Are you saying that off initial acceleration the car is sluggish but when the RPMs get higher the car pulls normally?

The "rattling" in the valve cover area, is this only during acceleration or can you hear during idling?

1. If acceleration is sluggish or if the car in general is sluggish one of the first things I would do is a tune up if you never did one on the car or if the car hasn't recieved on in a long time.

2. Now what worries me if what I am reading is correct is the car is sluggish and you hear "rattling" somewhere in the cylinder head area. You said you think its bad timing...well you could be right. I would do a compression test ASAP and make sure all cylinders are ok and I would make sure ALL timing marks are on spot.
