I know this is a old topic but I just started reading up on it. I'm really thinking about going this route. I'm just waiting to hear back from tearstone on something b4 i make my final decision. It just seems smarter to do this, more bang for the buck.

Awww man, see how we can't keep any money in our pockets.

I'm really thinking about doing this once I do my 5spd swap, that will be more in tune with the N/A route I'm going for.

The tutorial for the swap has been posted:

It also looks like we may be able to swap the DOHC from the 3000GT. We may have the clearance needed against the firewall that the 3G doesn't. I'm pretty sure the heads are the same on the 6G74 as the 6G72.

So you could possibly go with a 6G74 with DOHC's.

The N/A 3000GTs have 222 hp at the crank, so with the DOHC and the extra .5L of displacement on the 6G74, you could make some very decent N/A power.

The 3000GT has 222 it's 3.0L with DOHC
The 6G74 has 215hp 3.5L SOHC

So guessing that a hybrid 6G74 with DOHC would have about 235hp without bolt ons.

shit.....so many choices on what to do, Evo swap, Evo/Optima head swap, 6a12tt swap, this 6g74 swap, and even possibly a hybrid 6g74 DOHC.....so many choices but the 6g74 looks like the best way to go for NA power, now how much will this cost?

you can find an engine for $600-$800 on www.car-parts.com

I'm def doing this, I have the funds, just need to get some things done first w/ the G so I can give this my full attention.

Diamante engines are going for 650.00 to 1100.00 depending on miles and year on Ebay, Im not sure if it was the VRX because it didnt give a engine code. The cheapest was a 1998 with 70K on it for 650.00, I think. If look in local junk yard you might find them cheaper.

At club3g they quoted from a Diamante group that the engines were putting down about 170whp. 170whp is lot better than what my I4 is pumping out, wouldn't turboing my I4 give me just about same power or close to it. I know that 6G74 is N/A and it has more potential. I want be doing swap any time soon, but after reading the tuortial it seem straight forward (yeah, when your reading about it  ).

I read through the tutorial and the other link they had at 3g.....they said 200+hp.....also something was said about turboing the 6g74 using 6g72 parts, and having the potential of 500-600+ hp....but I may of misread that part......and I dont have that kind of money lying around.....wish I did, because this would actually be sweet to do, as well as finishing off the body work, rims, lower, new paint job, 5 spd swap, etc....anyways

got a full list of parts for the Evo/Optima head swap off of club3g, thats about $1500 for a safe minimum....this swap part wise is cheaper and more power is given right off the bat....and then swap in a 3kGT head for even more power....wonder how thirsty this engine would be? can we fit bigger gas tanks on our cars?

also us I4 guys would also have to get the V6 subframe or something like that for our cars wont we? cant remember the exact name of the part but when I was reading the parts list for the 6a13tt swap, we needed to get it so the V6 could be put in our cars...so Im guessing we would have to go to a scrap yard and pull that off of a V6 G.

and on the subject couldnt we just pull the engine out of the 3kGT VR-4 and just drop that in? or would the rear turbo not clear our firewall, or some crap like that.

Yeah they said 200hp+ with 6g72 parts, but the diamante engine alone was putting down 170whp. The Diamante engine will easier to find loaclly than any Vr4 engine and a lot cheaper. And dont forget about parts if something goes wrong with Vr4, you better have some deep pockets.

This is prolly the best swap for the power gains and price.

I think the VR4 motor is mounted opposite in the engine bay than our motors.

They were thinking that the 6G74 was going to dyno at ~200whp in our cars because we have a more aggressive tune. I think thats a load of bullshit personally. Maybe a few extra horses, but not 30whp.

The reason the 6G74 is a great engine swap is because all the electronics match up, and we can retain our stock ECU's. With the DOHC swap you would have to get a stand alone. DOHC would be a lot better to tune for the V6 turbo guys.

I totally agree! The easiest swaps to do are the ones that are plug and play.
YOu guys sure got it all going in your favor

I disagree about the needing a standalone part. The guy who did the Kia headswap to DOHC has his stock ECU with a flash running the car just fine. I dont see why this cant be done for the V6 ECU.

well whatever is the case.....whoever does this to their G needs to put up a tutorial for the swap into the G.

yeah but the headswap on the v6's woudl mean going fom a distributor to DIS.

i imagine it would require at least an ecu swap.

Also as far as I was told (by Mynes), the flash WILL NOT work for our Galant V6 cars, because we use a different processor in our ECUs than the eclipses do.

I have not looked at my ECU yet, he said he saw one from a 99 or 00 I think, so they could have changed all of them (ours and the eclipse) when they changed them in the 2001 eclipse for california spec.

after all the reading i did so far im still unsure if this can be done on the I4 G's or just the V6

from what ive read this swap is only for v6 guys, the i4's engine mounts are in different locations...

i was thinking about getting one of these engines, but i dont know if i could get the dohc to work or if i should stick with sohc.

You guys need to talk to Boostzealot on TGC, he has done the swap, I have personally rode in his car and its bad ass. Big difference between the 6g72 and the 74.

the 74 is mean, i have one in my dad's diamante.

i made an intake for it, sounds so good, you can actually hear the stroke.

It can only be done on v6 galants, stick with sohc because we know it fits.
