how much oil do you get back...

how many qts do you guys drain out when you do your oil change? i always pour in 4.5 qts per oil change. but every 3k-4k miles later, i only drain out about 3.8 qts. i was wondering what was the norm.

Don't forget you also have some oil in the engine stilll also have some in the filter.

well I only put 4 quarts to begin with. but he has a point. the filter holds a lot and there could be some in the engine.

u wait upwards of 4k? I always do 2500 miles - 3k at the worst

I change about 4k.....one time I waited 6k, I was being really lazy.

I usually take it to the dealership $15 with coupons. not sure what the hell it holds, Im going to start changing it myself.

I'd say that the motor holds a litle more then a half quart every time you change the oil. There are a ton of oil passages in the block and head for it to get held up in, not to mention in the oil pump itself.

One would logically assume that you should still pull out the same amount of oil you put in because all of that oil in the passages was from before. Interesting enough in the Toyota manuals they have a dry fill amount and a change fill amount.

The oil you are losing is most likely in the filter as it potentially holds about .5 quart worth of oil or so. Luckily with these engines it is very easy to spot an external leak.

I used to put in 4 quarts but after a while I get that lifter tick. I was told by a mechanic that if you dont put in enough oil you will get the tick so I put in 5 quarts and it runs fine and I dont get the tick anymore...

how many quarts for I4? and how many quarts for V6?

I'm running the I4 and I use the Mobil1 clean 5000 everytime. I put in 4 quarts cuz last time i put 4.5 the oil went way past the line on the dipstick. I change my oil around 4000- 4500ish miles after my last oilchange.

i believe its 4.5 qts for both the i4 and v6
