is the cover over the headers on I4's necassary for anything? If not, how heat tolerant does paint have to be to go on headers?

it covers a nice probably rusty exhaust manifold, as for painting it, use high heat specific paint

its not just a cover. its a heat shield.

Your O2 sensor wire would almost be laying on top of the manifold if you removed that heat shield. Not a good idea.

Not to mention your engine bay will get hotter.

you can get some high temp engine paint and paint the heat shield if you like.

Id recommend the 1500* High temp paint. The 500* stuff is too weak, the 800* may work, but the 1500* should work best.

Its a heat shield, if you remove it, your entire engine bay can heat up more then normal.

Ya, but if he aint getting no performance headers or whatever whats the point in taking off the heat shield to show those ugly stockies.
