Been reading the "War Stories" section and I am confused by the HP and Torque ratings in general and how they relate to RPM.

Example GTZ vs Prelude

Prelude
Horsepower 200 @ 7000 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 156 @ 5250 RPM

GTZ
Horsepower 195 @ 5500 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 205 @ 4000 RPM

So looking at the HP the Prelude has the GTZ by 5hp but at a much faster RPM and the torque is even more dramatic.

So what does it really mean, the GTZ has a few more RPM before redline. Any good info on this?

It means the Prelude doesnt see 200hp untill the 7000RPM mark. WHere as the GTZ will have 195hp by 5500RPM.

With the torque, the GTZ would take the Prelude off the line as it has a lot more torque and it sees it torque at 4000RPM where the Prelude wont get max torque untill 5250RPM.

Once both cars are rooling, I can only assume that the Prelude is lighter, so with the Prelude being lighter and it has its power up top at 7000RPM, the Prelude would start reeling in the GTZ by 3rd gear.

Who knows who would win, probably a close race.

Stock Dyno chart of a Prelude:

You can see where it makes what power at what RPM.

Now all the hp/torque numbers you quoted above where at the crank and not at the wheels. The dyno chart will show exactly what numbers it puts to the ground.

Seth pretty much summed it up pretty good!

Power to weight ratio is a factor, also gearing and other factors too.

thanks for the in info, I am sure that weight ratios and top RPMs have a lot to do with it.

Don't get too caught up with the Prelude thing, it was just an example I found.

Now I am looking at the same year Eclipse models and they rate the same engine at 210@5750

Is this just hype or is there really a difference?

They are different motors... Turbo i4 vs NA v6. The EClipse will run a 14s 1/4 stock, the Galant would do a high 15/low 16s 1/4 pass.

Seth I think he is talking about a 3G GTS not a 2G Turbo I4

The 210 hp Eclipse 6G72 (The GTS) has variable length runners, for the induction system. The GTS also has a slightly higher compression ratio, that I am sure doesnt hurt.

The major difference between the 3G eclipse and the 8G galants, are that the eclipses can come with 5-Speed Transmissions. That def. makes a big difference in thier 0-60 times compared to ours.

As for the regular Eclipse GT having 200/205 (calispec fedspec) instead of our 195. I am sure it has todo with the ECU tune, and the exhaust.

also keep in mind that the prelude (and eclipse for that matter) is alot more aerodynamic vs a galant....7gens have it better rounded edges but anyway if I can remember correctly the v6 8gen does 163 whp where as the prelude with the H22a (not the red valve cover model) does 165 whp (keep in mind thats a manual tranny so its not to great!!!) ..I've got dyno sheets one my server once its back online I should be able to post those.

i raced a 3g GT with intake and magnaflow muffler and i beat him....then i raced a 3g GTS with intake and exhaust with cat back and it beat me....i have CAI and magnaflow
