I have a 12" kicker L5 with a kicker kx600.1 amp. I wanted to step up to the 1000 watt range without breaking the bank and without sounding like garbage. any suggestions? thanks.

Might want to watch your rms. The 12inch L5 is 600rms and 1200 peak. If you run it with a 1000watt rms amp the odds of it blowing because it can't handle the power fed to it increase a lot.

i would stay with what you have now unless you add another l5, or you will blow it, rms is what really matters,
i had the kx 1200 which i am assuming is the one you would get from the current setup you have and it is actually rated at 1400 or so watts if you read the card it comes with and will blow your sub quick. if you do go higher make sure you bridge it correctly to meet the specs of your sub
