Ok Im under the impression that the timing belt should be replaced every 60k-70k miles, my car has 68,805 mi, so I need a timing belt, I go to my regular place where i bought the car from and they quote me a price and then tell me Mitsubishi says it doesnt have to be done unitll I hit 90k, but to go check my Mitsu Service Manual.....I dont own a Mitsu service manual so I check my Haynes Repair manual and it says I can wait untill 100k...now Im confused and slightly happy about that so I go to my local mitsu dealer to have them quote my a price and to verify the 90K and he tells me 60K, but he never checked the service manual to tell me what it exactly says, either way from experience what do you guys suggest?

It depends on whether your car is Fed spec or Cali Spec. Fed spec cars should be changed at 60,000. Cali spec cars can go to 90,000. I have a cali spec and changed my timing belt water pump and idler pulleys at 90,000. No problems at all.

up to you. my idler pulley said goodbye at around 80k. not quite 90 but over 60k. when that pulley says goodbye, so does the belt as it freezes the water pump.

I waited till 80k, and my timing belt that came with the car looked brand new. Then again, better to be safe than sorry. I never got my idler pulley replaced, and now after reading Pinoy's post.....I'm going to check into that, as it wasn't on the maintenence list that comes with the car.

60 dude, you don't want that thing to snap on the highway. It's called preventive maintenance for a reason.

especially with something that important.

a couple hundred bucks now vs. a couple grand later.

Did mine myself at 130K miles. NOT a good idea to wait that long, but the belt looked fine. Far more have broken and caused serious damage before 90K, so I suggest that you change it now, while it's convenient and you already kinda planned on it.

just change it now... just because the belt looks fine doesnt mean an idler wont fail on you

get a full timing kit from somewhere and change out everything... dont just change the belts BETTER SAFE THEN SORRY my whole kit cost 200 from gatorback then i bought the oem belts

if your debating over a couple hundred imagine what you'll be doing when it cost a couple grand....

Actually, it's called "recommended but not required" at 60,000 in the service manual for Cali spec cars. "Replace" at 90,000. For Fed specs it's "Replace" at 60,000. For me, "preventative maintenace" was having the belt and the water pump and the idler pulley inspected by my mechanic and having him tell me it's OK. The most likely failure component is the water pump and then the idler pulley according to him. He's a long time Mitsubishi specialist.

So like Pinoy said, it's up to you to determine how much risk you're willing to take. But as long as it's apart, replace everything.

Im going to wait after I get 2 more paychecks, about $800, that way Im covered. so what is this idler pulley? never heard of that having to be replaced.....but I should have that replaced as well when I get my timing belt and water pump replaced then. thanks for telling me that.

the 6 cylinder belts can easily last 100k. Ive seen them last 180k (but I DONT recommend that).

the 4 cylinder belts are more prone to failure. i would not recommend waiting 'til 100k for them. Id do it about 75k or so, if not sooner.
note that if you're in a warm state, the belt will usually last a lot longer than a cold state.

as far as temps I live in a warm and cold state, 100 in the summer, 20-30s during winter, some years even colder then that.

I called the mitsu dealership in north Phoenix today and they quoted me $450 for the timing belt and $250 for the idler pully. Seems like a pretty good deal.... right??

I bought the car when it had 62,000 miles on it. Now it has about 89,000. Im assuming the belt wasnt changed before i bought it. Is there any way to find out?..... carfax??

I believe carfax wouldnt have any info on upkeep of cars... maybe ask the dealer or person you got the car from.... if they have any paperwork of maintenance of the vehicle... other than that i think your stuck guessing.. even so i say just get it done before you hit 100k...

I looked at mine and its still in good shape... although my car was born and raised in san diego... i got it with 27k on it... im up to 80k and it still looks good... I am in atlanta now so i will be getting mine done before summer of 07...

I dont know if it matters but i hardly ever gun my car or drive it fast... most of miles have been cruised no hard core accel... i figure that might help with wear and tear on a car... :-)

sounds about what i paid when i got mine done a couple months ago. i went to tempe autoplex loop, tho. if you take it into the dealer, they can tell quick if you need to change the belt, or if it has been. i asked them when i got my oil changed around 59k to look over that stuff. they told me my belt was missing a few teeth but would be ok for a while, but i opted to change it out anyhow.

Tempe autoplex would be a little closer than going to Bell. But do they have a mitsu dealership there? I didnt think they did. I went to Bell Rd. Mistu to get a tune up and they actually hooked me up.

Even if mine looks OK, im still going to get it changed to be safe.

Yup! they have a mitsu dealer. If you get on the Autoplex loop from I-10, take the first left instead of looping all the way around, and it will be at the end of that short road, next to the Hundai dealership.

what's the point of replacing the belt at all. in my grand caravan i let it rip on me, and i still was able to drive it. perfectly able to continue to drive, but just a little bit less power. i wouldn't replace it until it breaks. and even when it does just pop the hood and it's easy to replace no problem.

Im not sure about your mini van.... but the way the galant is setup, if your timing belt snaps, its gonna fuck up your engine about %90 percent of the time. Most of the time this means a new engine !!!
