View Full Version : My 7g VR4 - single turbo swap - now with short vid

Thought I might put up a running commentary of the fun I'm having converting my 7G galant to single turbo... Also, its drift spec  by virtue of a locked centre diff and lack of front axles.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Markyface/Ak0.jpg

Right. Started off with a tidy enough E84 VR4. Came with the wheels, exhaust, suspension etc all done, its just KYB shocks, some random springs. Added a strut brace which made a world of difference too. When I got it, I swapped the intercooler for an evo 4 one, cranked the boost to 15psi ish and enjoyed it for about... a month.

Then got bored, and thought that having it a rear skidder could be fun for a bit. Always wanted to do it with a VR4, figured big torque with a long wheelbase could be interesting. Did this simply - locked centre diff, removed front axles... Voila. Also solid mounted the rear diff while it was all being worked on.

That was great fun - in the wet it would let go in 4th when it came on boost , in the dry it'd be second in a straight line, third with provocation or with a bit of lock on. Well, it WAS great fun, until the thing decided it didn't like protracted 8000rpm limiter action and sent a couple of rods out the side of the block   . Not to worry, new engine in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Markyface/howdidthathappen.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Markyface/blockbroke.jpg

While waiting to put that in though, got used to my mates 4G63 powered 6G VR4 - which had something mine doesn't, a top end powerband. So, only one thing for it - put a bigger turbo than his on mine

So removed the engine again. Off came the old TD-025's (good riddance), blocked up all the oil / water lines that weren't needed, and started looking for a decent turbo. Ended up using a TD05H from a lancer evo 4 - twin scroll thing. Similar to the E8 turbo, bit less capable on the flow side of things but it'll do me fine. Mounting it was done in our garage - used a pair of rear exhaust manifolds (high mount), and joiner pipes to put the turbo where it sits now. Wanted to high mount the turbo, but space constraints wouldn't let it happen. Damnit.

As you can see thats all sorted now, just got to get the oil feed taken care of (i.e just got to pay for the braided hose  ), and mount the external wastegate + make the turbo downpipe. Sweet f-all to get done really, just time + money really.

Oh, and put the diff I originally took the thing off the road for back in

Its alive :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Markyface/donefromright.jpg

Will get a vid up of it once its running properly. Weathers crap so im not game to try a test drive in the rain

Have put it back to 4wd as well - rwd was fun, but it had no traction before with 180kW - aiming to go well past that now and no point doing all this work just to smoke it up whenever i nail it  . Also have the goal of beating my previous best of 12.6 and it has no chance of that in rwd.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v625/Markyface/manifoldoffcar.jpg

Manifold was simple - just took time to make everything work together. Had to fit the turbo, intake, oil drain, radiator pipes, exhaust, wastegate and the dump for that... All into not much space. I'm just stoked it all came together halfway tidy :D

Have plenty more pics if anyone wants them :)

Very cool. RWD is cool and all, but its not too practical in our cars unless you can fit some 275+ tires on the back haha. AWD ftw!

Hey man LOVE! the work and color thats about everything I wanted to do to mine I want to try the impossible, take a 3000GT VR4 engine, tranny, AWD and throw it in my next G, I just feel like it can be done with enough time and money. Time will tell... Oh! and send me some pics I pm'ed you my email address, pics of EVERYTHING! Thanks man.

Ako..I am very impressed with the work you have done. I am excited to see the performance results from the work.

I have to step up on working on the new setup on my 7g..but I have been drawn to getting my 6g GVR4 running right and getting drivetrain and suspension mods done.

Curious..do the 7g VR4's come stock with a rear viscous LSD?

Goku

I must say I'm impressed Mark, thats a very tidy setup you have there.

When are you planning on running it out at Ruapuna ?

ako
04-08-2007, 02:39 AM
Not for a long while, want to enjoy it for a bit first.

First impressions - 12psi on this turbo is like 18psi on the twins, with more top end

And I've got it running 16psi now

F$#king rapid sums it up pretty well.

4-g - most of the manual ones have a viscous rear, same unit as an evo 1-2.

Goku
04-08-2007, 05:08 PM
Sweet, does it have much lag compared to the twins at all?

Also, are you still running the stock ecu ?

Hate to say it, but even with the plans I have going with mine, I don't think I'll get the same power you have.

ako
04-08-2007, 08:24 PM
has a manifold leak so its laggy as all hell before 5k rpm... as in im lucky to get 5psi by 5000 in second.

then you hear a whistly noise and the thing lifts up the nose and goes for gold

So long as revs are up its responsive. I sold one of my old vr4's to a mate, its now got downpipes, big cooler + piping, avcr etc, this thing would leave it for dead and his is as far as you could push the stock turbos.

Stock ECU at the moment, working @ nzefi now so will be getting a) dyno time shortly and b) a link in it once finances have recovered from xmas and getting this on the road.

Goku
04-09-2007, 03:36 AM
I'll be seeing you soon then, I'm looking at getting a Link plus G3 in about a month or so ( I forget when they are released ) to aid in my future plans :D

Awesome job, man, glad to see it up and running again. I always wondered what would give first if converted to RWD, the tranny or the engine. How do you think the drive train held up?

A long term goal i have is to convert to AWD after doing the engine swap. and also playing with the RWD thing.

Sleepervr-4
04-17-2007, 10:29 AM
I think the awd swap is is a goal for all us usdm 7g galants. Someone just needs to step up and do it already. This winter I believe I will give it a go 8)

ako
04-18-2007, 01:08 AM
Easier option might be shipping a shell over to the US from here or japan maybe?

Just bring it in complete, then swap over the dash + steering rack - voila, LHD TT galant. I've seen it done with lancer evos (early ones) and they are very very simlar in a lot of respects - the galant is just the overfed big brother

Car is still running happily. Have gotten the boost a bit more tame now, makes about 8psi by 4k and full boost by 4500 - gear dependant though. Great fun to drive - 80km/h to 120km/h in about 3 seconds so I'm grinning :D .

Now just weighing up whether to sell it, or get injectors + ecu and go for big power.

ako

Wellll finally got a short video online - pretty crap though

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwOJeNk1PyY

Was on 10psi, worlds most silent wastegate at the time. All sorted now and much louder :D . Will see if I can get any done showing revs / speed / boost etc. We've timed it doing approx 4.5 seconds (using video!) 0-100 with 2 on board on 12psi so in my books the swap was worth it.

Aaaand made a decision too - car is up for sale at the moment (here if anyone is interested, welcome to new zealands version of Ebay http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=100162223). Looking to update to an 8G VR4 - can't argue with the 500cc's extra with no extra weight.

Pretty much. Automatic E84A VR-4s can be had in good tidy condition for as little as NZ$2000 (US$1500 approx). A manual one can be picked up for around $4000 upwards. E39A VR-4s are still fetching over $5000 for even rough condition ones - it's insane, purely because no more can be imported into the country. Same case for E84A's - but they just aren't as desirable for some reason.

I picked up my '93 E54A MIVEC V6 7G Galant for NZ$1500, but it had minor panel damage and had 193k on the clock when I got it:

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l230/te71se/93%20Galant%20VX-R/galant4-1.jpg

I also picked up my '94 MIVEC Galant for $500, under the impression it had run a big end bearing or two. Turns out it snapped a couple rods and broke some pistons. But still it was a cheap car:

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l230/te71se/94%20Galant/g1.jpg

More pics of both the cars here: http://s97.photobucket.com/albums/l230/te71se/

Here in NZ we are basically flooded with used Japanese imports. However since 2002ish the government stopped cars which didn't meet a certain frontal impact standard into the country - so as a rule of thumb usually a pre 1996 car now cannot be imported from Japan.

Only fault is rear turbo has seized, estimate cost from Diesel and Turbo to fix is $700.00

That's just the labour cost - they are such a c**t to get to at the rear. There's hardly any space between the rear head and the firewall.

Yay for trademe. NZD to USD is about 60c US is $1 kiwi or thereabouts. Got a vid from outside the car now, fixed the dodgy boost controller so full boost from about 4 - 4500 rpm or so and the thing actually vents when its meant to!
