Can you tell where its coming from? Anything hitting the belts or fans? Does it happen all the time? Have someone rev the car while you are under the hood listening, see if you can pin point a location. Could be a several different things.

You know I think I might of had the same problem, never fixed it though didn't sound to serious so I left it alone. Try spraying some lube around the pulleys while its running and see if that does anything for you.

Check your engine oil level. The engine on my 7G galant makes some weired noises when oil is low.

Something similar happened to my Accord, and now it's happening to my Galant as well. On my Accord, what happened was I ran over a large bump in the road and it smacked the heatshield to my Cat, so the shield was just barely dangling there, still attached with two bolts, but the other two ripped off. The vibrtation around 2k rpm made a horrible metallic grinding/fan noise because the shield was rattling against the exhaust. And with the vibrations, it sounded like a fan or fan blades.

What I did to fix this is just take the entire heatshield off. Problem solved.

But with my Galant, I no longer have access to a lift and the shops in my area refuse to do anything for me due to "legal issues". I don't want the thing replaced, I just want it off, what is the sheild protecting anyway? The ground?

Could it possibly be crankwalk? I mean, I know that most crankwalk cases are on the 2nd gen Eclipse, but it can happen to any car.

me, reggie, and a dsm guy were discussing this. they have never heard of a 64 walking.

have you? i just need to know if anybody has heard of one doing so.

as for the heat shield, why do you need a lift. jackstands do the trick. i lost part of my exhaust heat shield magically. it just fell off while i was taking a turn.

After looking around and seeing the research that Magnus and RRE have done, I have yet to see or hear of a 64 walking. Especially since the only really significant difference between the 1g and 2g blocks was the oil squirters and where the oil feed to them is located. So since the 64's never came equipped with oil squirters I would find it hard to believe that they would walk the crank ... unless you had it machined for the 2g squirters.

When I moved back to Iowa, I left my ramps behind, all I have is one hydralic jack. I'm a big guy too, so the jack won't lift as high as needed to get myself under there, lol.

In all honesty, crank walk can happen to any engine, although as unlikely it is for your engine, it is still a possibility.
