when i first started this, it was What Can I Do To Get Better MPG?

but i have a new problem. i was talking to MrJayDeeOne and we realized im having problems with my gas

ever since April 10th, 2007 when i got my Galant, i have ALWAYS gotten barely 220-240 (per 12-13 gal) with city and highway or just city or just highway. my MPG is barely 18. so far this is what i came up with

- get fuel injector cleaner
- try a tune up

what else? i mean ill spend it if i have to, to then save money on gas because others are getting 25-30 while i get 18.

no i dont drive like a jackass, just throwing that out there early. and this tank that i just filled i got barely 35miles for the first quarter of it. something is wrong here.

also, 12-13 gal is all i can really get out of the tank before the light is always on. im not sure how much more i can go on the light tho, but either way. 18MPG is pretty bad even just using 12-13 gal

please help

make sure the PCV valve, fuel filter, fuel pump are in good condition, although i don't think there's anything you can do about the fuel filter, i believe that's built into the tank. i just changed my PCV valve.
also, make sure the oil is changed regularly, and don't let the car go to rock bottom empty, fill up around 1/4 tank left.

and don't drive like a madman, easy acceleration and deceleration. you'd be surprised how much you can save when driving easy.

what can i do/mod to get better MPG?
i hear the 99 tank is supose to hold 13.6-14 gallons but mine barely hold 12.5 if im lucky, what could be wrong? if something is wrong, what can i do?

Thats because you still have fuel left in your tank. The tank holds 14.6 gallons of fuel. I can get about 270mpg City and 340mpg highway(prolly could get 15mpg more, but im not pushing my tank to empty). And that aint bad considering i drive pretty fast. If i accelerated like a normal person, and did the speed limit...i could prolly get 290city/370highway :?

lol yes driving a bit easier would help, once in a while its fun not to tho, but for the tank i filled it up with the light on one time just to see how much will go in, it couldnt even take 12.5 maybe 13 if i was lucky

should be somethin like 6g72 (can't remember exactly what it is :smt017 )

while going to CT, i've cracked 400 on one tank, goin 55 the WHOLE way, but with the Outlander IM, i don't have to granny-drive as much to get good mpg.

For all you cheapskates out there, running below 1/4 of a tank just to avoid spending money that instant is the dumbest thing you can do. Anything below 1/4 of a tank your getting very close to skipping the pickup in and out of fuel, with this pulsation of load and no load on the fuel pump you will destroy it. Your fuel pump cools itself with fuel and by running one dry your greatly reducing its life.

never thought of that... but i dont run it dry ever i just did that once to see my gas miles and to see how big the tank is so i know

how are your spark plugs and wires? injectors? are they working properly??? :?

most likely, if they wernt i wouldnt be able to tell the diff bcuz the car has always acted the same for the past 4 months that ive had it, so if they were bad to start i wouldnt know the difference

WOW 220... i average about 400 - 450 miles a tank.... I am a very rpm minded driver.... when i drive normal which is never going over 3k only when i shift from 2nd to 3rd the rpms will pop up to about 3200.... I filled up once every two weeks... believe it or not... only type of engine crap i have is v6 ebay intake with filter and a obx type r muffler... thats it... And honestly even if i punch it alot on a whole tank i still will get over 300 miles to a tank....

But i also only use chevron with techron and i use 89 but once every 7 tanks ill use 93.... and thats been for the whole life of the engine after 20k miles on it... I have 10w-30 oil in the car ever since 20k first day i bought it i changed...

O yea and i keep it clean... and i think it can help... no build up means more sequential movement of the wheels and brake system...

but im just guess.... also when i clean my car once i week i degrease the wheel ducts and springs and shit once a month...

All I get is 220 ish miles on 10-11 gallons, thats right in at 21-22, most of my driving is in town with very stupid traffic. On the highway I can pull up over 30, but I rarely drive anywhere thats all highway.

Are you trying to tell me that you get 400mpg on a V6 Galant??? Are you sure you dont have a 4cyl? :?

i've only got 400 miles on one tank ONCE... and that was all highway miles (no more than 55mph) for NJ -> CT -> NJ, and i'm a 4cyl.

i guess only using the 10-11 and going 220 is about 20-21 per gallon, rite now im just over a 1/4 tank (went driving with my girlfriend the other night for fun all over CT) since i filled up like 3 days ago lol, and im just now hitting 220, but that was alot of highway too altho most of it was a steady 70-80mph even going that fast people were riding my ass lol but anyways i guess 20-21 is pretty good but what if i was to replace the fuel stuff with all brand new stuff would that make it better? if so what parts would i need and how much would it cost?

Yeh thats understandable. But 400mpg driving through the city with a V6? :? Ill prolly be getting close to 400mpg once i change my spark plugs. :P Ive got 107k miles on my spark plugs and still running fine! :P

IMO common sense is probably all you need for better mpg.

think about it. you do all the suggested maintenance on time . spark plugs, oil change, pcv valve, check the tires. you'll get good gas mileage.

clean the car. keep the outside clean. clean out all the trash and unnecessary things in your car. the heavier the car the more work it will take to move it. the more work it takes, the more fuel you use.

drive normally. if you drive like a madman, you're gonna end up making your car work more than it has to.

with that said. last time i fueled up, i calculated and I was getting over 30mpg with mixed driving on my v6.

oh yea. the tank is 16 gallons but you'll probably never fill up 16 gallons cuz there's always that last little bit that the pickup can't pickup.

400mpg (miles per gallon) really? So you do what 4000 miles on less than 3/4's of a tank.

A trick my friend does with his JEEP SUV is to... ease off the acceleration as he approaches a stop sign or red light, apply brake and go to neutral and stay at neutral till it's time to get up and go. Supposedly saves him gas.. but I havn't noticed since his SUV is a gas guzzling son of a gun!

I would assume it might be bad for the tranny on an automatic vehicle...
I can see why he does it, though. On manual cars there are people who, instead of gearing down at a stop, they just clutch and go to neutral.. wait for a full stop and pop it back into gear 1. But the thing with automatic cars is that they don't have a clutch.. so it probably is bad for the tranny on an automatic vehicle. Just my thought and opinion though, not sure what the real facts are.

Take this from a guy who's blown up 2 automatics in 30k miles, that will soon equal boom. Especially on a Moper automatic.
