Poor Fuel Economy - 2002 4 cyl

I average 20 mpg in mixed (mostly city) driving and in max economy mode (70 MPH w/ cruise, no AC) only get 26 MPG. Sometimes in the city it drops to 18 or 19 mpg. This is about the same mileage as my company car, a 4.6 liter V8 Crown Victoria, which I drive much more aggressively (since the gas is free).

What is wrong, the car has gotten this crummy mileage since new, and I hate getting V8 economy from an inline 4?

Your gas mileage is on par with every other 8th generation Galant and what was listed on the sticker.

my VR4 does 20mpg at a constant 78-80 mph
Drive hard and fast it can go down to 10-12 mpg

that mileage sounds normal. but if u think it should be better than that, meaning it was better b4. there are a few things u could do...

check ur tire pressure
remove any uneccesary objects from the car
keep the car clean, esp. the front end
follow the general service intervals
watch ur general driving technique.

The fuel economy on a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder should be better than that of a 4.6 liter V8, especially since the Galant is a much lighter car than a Crown Vic.

This is definitely sub-par for this class of car/engine.

I looked it up. Teh fuel economy for the galant is 21/27 and the CV its 18/26, so ur doing pretty normal. but yea its not only the size of the motor that matters. the weight either. its things like the gearing of the tranny and stuff like that, that also affect fuel economy

to tell u the truth, if u look at the fuel economy of other v8's, chances are its not gonna be as high as the CV's. its actually pretty good.

If you think Mitsubishi is bad about fuel you should see Nissan...most people complain about it too.

I get 21/26 on my V6 galant! I thought the I4 would be slightly higher than that... surprising!

I think I avg. around 14-17 mpg..... and I'm not even done with all my mods yet. I have to fill up at least twice a week. Oh well, the price of performance, lol.

It is a shocker though. Even my mom's 93 Accord EX (2.3 liter automatic) gets 24/32. Getting under 20MPG in a 4 cylinder UNMODIFIED car is definitely not cool.

Honda's get good mileage, and obviously Galants don't!

What? My Sentra does 29 to 31 in the City and 39 to 44 on the highway depending how fast I drive. Manual tranny. But it has a little 11.5 gallon tank. I can almost make it down to L.A. (from Sacramento) in one trip. I would usually stop off in Coalinga just in case, and to take a wizz. That's over 400 miles 1 way.

My Sentra and Galant are almost the same because of the different gas tank sizes. I do about 300 miles a week and have to fill up once a week.

300 / 15* (Galant) = 20 mpg

300 / 10* (Sentra) = 30 mpg

* Based on fill up. These numbers are really pushing it close. I ran out of gas once at exactly 300 miles. All city driving on the Galant.

I was getting about the same mileage until i switched to syntethic oil. I now get around 24mpg city and I have a real heavy foot. Haven't tested hwy yet so i'll keep you posted.
