Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody knew where the tranny filter is located on the 2001 Galant ES (4 cylinder)? According to the manual it should be a screw on filter but I was unable to find it after performing a quick check.
Pictures would be great or an somewhat extensive description since I am a newbie (lol). Thanks in advance.

It's a screen inside the transmission and is not a standard service item. Don't worry about replacing it.

It could help out the tranny if its running funny though.

also make sure you use the mitsu fluid, anything else will mess up the tranny...do a search for tranny fluid here and you will see....since i assume you are looking for the filtr you prob want to change it

I wouldn't recommend roughly $800 in dealership labor to change the internal filter.

i agree. if your transmission is that bad, you might as well get it rebuilt while you're in there.

Thanks for all the info. I'll stop by the dealership today and pick up some Diamond SP III. From what I gather a simple drain and fill should be enough without having to replace the filter. Tranny is not acting funny I was just a little bit low on the fluid and the car has only 65K miles.

also, they did quote me $20 for the screw on filter and said they had it stock, but it appears to be a too big of a job.

Once again, thx for all of the great feedback.

The screw on filter is only for 1999's and maybe some 2000's (not sure on the 2000's). Use the service manual procedure for changing the fluid. The procedure should be posted up here somewhere - just search for it.
