Just started the swap yesterday. Got the trans out, had troubles removing the spacer. I am going to go get a torch tonight and try to heat it out. Pics:

Tips at getting the axle nuts off when you are working by yourself.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9641_us.jpg

Note to self, dont use cheap screw drivers while attempting the above:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9638_us.jpg

Easiest way to get the axle out of the hub. Unbolt the suspension fork and the lower control arm from the chassis. From there the hub swings free:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9640_us.jpg

Easiest way to pop out the axles. Stick a screwdriver between the axle and the trans, gently tap the screwdriver with a hammer:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9645_us.jpg

If the axles dont slide out of the hub easily, do not use a hammer directly ln the end of the axle or you will risk damaging the threads. Instead get a small screwdriver and put it in the small hole at the end of the axle and tap the screwdriver:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9643_us.jpg

Have to use a long extension in order to fit a socket wrench in on the driverside:
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9642_us.jpg

More then likely the reason the trans failed. Looks like the lines had been leaking, probably ran itself out of fluid and overheated.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9649_us.jpg

5spd starter plate. Great way to spend $11

Thought I was starting out smart today, got myself the recommended pilot bearing removal tool ...

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9686_us.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9687_us.jpg

But it turned slightly crooked and ...
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9688_us.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9689_us.jpg

The devil itself resides in this spacer, started cutting it, thought I could jiggle it out with the air hammer I just purchased.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9694_us.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9697_us.jpg

But that didnt work, I just tore up the spacer. I could turn the spacer counter clockwise with the air hammer, but it didnt come out at all. So welding an axle nut to the spacer lolz. Had a wrench on the other end of the crank to hold it in place, but the huge pipe we were using to turn the spacer kept loosening the crank bolt that holds the crank pulley on, so we made a sweet uhhh I dont even know what to call it :p
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9699_us.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9698_us.jpg

But yeah, we were able to turn the spacer a little but, but again it didnt move out of place, so more welding. We welded and axle washer to the outside of the axle nut so we could use this gear puller to pull the spacer out. But we just broke that puller as well haha.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9709_us.jpg

Our last ditch effort, we threaded in a small pipe, welded that pipe to the spacer, welded in a few cracked welds from the last attempt, and used my nice handy dandy pipe to wiggle the spacer out as my friend used the air hammer on the beast.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9720_us.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9718_us.jpg

And she is out! Took about 3-4 hours to get that one spacer out, guess after 212k miles, that sucker felt like it was at home.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9726_us-1.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9722_us.jpg

Now I can install my flywheel, but I need a new gasket, kinda burned it up with the torch/welder.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_9730_us.jpg

And for all of you people who were able to wiggle that spacer out with no more then a pair of vice grips ...... I hate you all!

Cool, cool.

I think you should swap in a 6G72, though, and enjoy having a jackstand racer! ;)

Damn, yeah, you definitely need a new rear main seal :o

Yeah a 6g72 swap crossed my mind, but Id use the "good" version of that motor out of the 3kgt ooooh :P

Nice Work Seth!!! I see you had a lot of fun with the Pilot bearing as well :):) I just took the air jack hammer directly to the bearing and it gave in so to speak :)

I guess you will be swapping over your old dohc head and turbo setup?

Nice progress Seth..but seriously, you need to get a air gun. Your life would be soo much easier with one...especially when you wanted to remove the axle nut.

Yeah I had the first post already typed out from last week, was in the process of making the second post. And my welder sucks. Its just a gassless Licoln mig, its about 10 year old. Doesnt make pretty welds anymore, it needs a new feed line as it doesnt feed as smoothly as it used to.

Dude I had air tools! Used the impact gun to get the flywheel bolts off, used the air hammer/chisel on the pilot bearing, it just tore it up. I wish I would have taken a picture of the spacer before I welded the nut on there, it was basically a few strands of metal pointing out haha. I didnt have the impact gun at the time of axle removal, but my method is cake, I just step on the breaker bar a few times and the nut loosens with ease. Hopefully if the auto parts stores have the rear main seal in stock, I will have it on the road tomorrow.

Picked up the rear main seal today. Didnt get a whole lot of time to work on it, but accomplished a decent amount.

Installed new rear main seal.

5spd flywheel bolt ont he left, auto on the right ... you cannot use the auto bolts.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f39/sethmo38/Automobiles/1997%20Monarch%20Green%20Galant%20ES/IMG_0335_us.jpg

Holes for clutch master cylinder already lined out for you, even the carpet padding is cut, you just pull it out. Dont be fooled though, the small bottum hole is correct, as is the middle big hole, but the top hole does should not be as big as it is outlined, it should be the same size as the bottum small hole. Maybe I have a 2g clutch master cylinder, but just something to make sure of before you start cutting. I used a drill to start the holes, then a air powered die grinder with a drill bit to cut the circles out, worked pretty good, just not the cleanest route.

Parted out the silver 7g. Had problems with the frame from a wreck a few years ago. Picked this one up with a blown auto trans, straight body, clean paint for $600. Havent decided what I want to do with it after the 5spd swap.

Aw, yeah that's something I've gotta watch when I do this engine this weekend. I think I'll just reuse my rear main seal and housing since it's still perfectly OK. Depth is already set right since it's not leaking, so that's a plus!

See, I found when I was doing mine last time that there's a small groove in the crankshaft/flywheel boss where the seal's lip is supposed to sit. It's easiest to just measure the previous depth and go from there, but you can always kind of guesstimate when it reaches that groove.

Finished it up tonight. Need a new oil pan though, old one is rusty and have a pinhole leak in it now from jacking the motor up and down. Might try to clean it up and jb weld it or something.

Stock Exedy clutch, just reused the one I had

Have to findangle it up, I find it easiest to angle it up like this, rest the bell housing on the crossmember, then jack the bottum up.

She is done. Finished up little things tonight. Starts, runs, drives great. Need to raise the idle a bit, the light weight flywheel really makes the revs free. Definitely notice a difference between the Fidanza and the ACT Streetlite! For what it is, its pretty quick(stock 5spd, air filter, flywheel), Id say probably high 15 to low 16s 1/4.

Going to wash and detail it this weekend. Havent decided if I am going to paint the bumper or repaint the entire car, but I have the DE grills to install(thanks Zigenscarface, your the man!) and need to order another corner. Dont make too much fun of her ... she is speeeecial :D

how bout next mod... get the corner lights, and grill for your jdm bumper hehe... I'm with Grim, get an air gun or impact wrench, especially dealing with 212k. Oh and don't worry, i wish i could have gotten that spacer out in 4 hours compared to almost a week. I finally used the tool that Advanced auto carries. it has a sliding weight on a bar. Great progress Seth!

i love this thread!

it reminds me the time when i swapped my a/t for a 5 m/t on my 7g galant.

seth, you need to get the following:

1. 2-pot front calipers.... (it looks like you are already using a double diaphragm hydrovac = good!)
2. 4G63T (do you still have your old one?)
3. front strut bar
4. rims (size 16s or 17s) and a good set of tyres
5. paint her green.
6. interior detailing

Im not sure what I want to do. Id like to do a lot of things, but with lacking funds and plans to move soon, I might just paint the front bumper, fix the door ding on the driver side, and sell it. I was watching Top Gear last night and they were test driving the new Aston Marton DBS and I love that color green, I think it was Mercury Silver or California Sage, not sure. Would be sick to have the car painted that color, rock some flat or satin black 5 spoke 16" or 17" wheels like Motegi Tracklites, and have it slammed on some coilovers.

I still have my 4g63t but dont want to put that motor back in unless I a)Rebuild it or b)stroke it. But then again I run into that part where I have no money haha. I dont know anymore, I just want a race car. I just should buy a pre-built Spec Miata and have some fun. I dont care about street cars anymore, I would rather have a dedicated track car.

And I have the black 17s I had on my silver 7g, but they are heavy and I dont think I want to put them on this car(Its already slow as it is :P). Im either going to sell the tires to my roomy or get some 17" rotas or something.

Why not do that g4cs swap? The dsm guys say it better than the 4g64 cause its a 2.4 6 bolt and no crank walk. They can be found on the 89-92 sonata not sure if the years are right, but they can be found cheaply.

It isn't common (Come to think of it no confirmed cases) that the 7bolt 4G64 is prone to crankwalk...just the 7bolt 4g63's.

Then again there isn't alot of "turbo" 7bolt 4g64's either, but there are many 7bolt 4g64's on the 7g's and 2g spyder's with tons of miles on them and haven't crankwalked either.

You just got the green 7g, and now you are contiplating on selling it already Seth?

Well in Seth's defense, he is starting all over. I'm sure it wasn't as much fun swapping to five speed this time like it was the first time. I know if i had too, i would not mod another Galant. 03-23-2008, 10:40 AM
I say cheapo stuff that catches a buyer's eye.. header, intake, catback, springs n struts, tune. That way A) you're still modding on stuff that is cake for you to do, and you more than likely won't run into any problems, and B) You can feel like you're getting more out of the car instead of wasting its potential..keep it N/A with bolt-ons so it sounds mean and performs a bit better.. minimal cosmetic mods, maybe paint, tails, cheap HIDs and light rims.. do some work on the brakes and rotors.. maybe an aftermarket pulley.. SAFC for a tune and for potential buyers to think it's faster than it is :P And then just keep it CLEAN 24/7!

i have one question..
... i got a 5spd f5m33 of a supposed 95 gst
checked out the part numbers n its true.
now evertyhing done after fighting with my distributor for half an hour to line up the key to the cam my shop closed n i finished the bleeding and small adjustments outside in the parking lot. now i put the damn thing in first and the passenger axle is dancing around like crazy. i used a new one given to me with the tranny off a guy thats a a gst fanatic and has 1st n 2nd gens n parts like crazy. i find by close inspection and affirm by google n forums that certain year shafts are smaller diameters. now i realize he might have given me an incorrect passenger axle of a 1st gen.
logic states my original one will do the job.
so does the 7gen galant pass axle work fine or will it be the right diameter but not the right length?
i looked up on advance auto parts for part numbers and they are different for 96gst n 96 galant.
and the are automatic axles also. should be same as galant 5spd if im correct.
so to all on this forum who has sweated the same hell ive gone trough today to make my car 5 spd know if my axle will work (original from my car) ?
i know ill find out tommorow but if you guys can save me a needles dissemblance of my cars pass side again for the 4th time this 2 weeks after changing the shaft and blowing the auto shortly after and now having the wrong axle in there rendering my normally reliable car undrivable..... id be greatly apreciated.
thanks

only way is to get a puller from snapon or some quality and ridiculously expensive.
n make sure that main seal sits in there nice, dont cut corners and get a quality one equal or better to oem dealer spec. after the abuse that crank cover went trough i think ud rather get a new cover, it comes already pressed with the new main seal ;)

2g GST axles have a different spline count then 7g Auto/Manual axles. I could not fit GST axles in my 7g trans. I dont know about the 1g axles, but if you have a 2g trans, the auto/manual 7g axles will not work. Good luck!

Hone your cylinders and see what it comes to, i would recommend getting a ridge reamer since you have a nice little ridge at the top. All in all though for 230k on the engine i say not bad. Should clean up, and i had some of that at the top of mine but the rings do not go up that far so you may not have a problem.

nice
with ur 230k and u looking into ur cylinder walls maybey u can answer this question.
the oil consumption isuue in these cars are worn piston rings after hitting over 100k or simply valve seats gone bad?

i drive 60-100 miles a day straight highway and about every 200-300-500 miles depending on how hard im on the car it burns away a qourt or half of one.

i use M1 syn and even used M1 delvac. tried everything. might be high rev driving? or simply valve seats.

when i punch it behind a mild mist of sut from running a lil rich i see some white smoke. and its not the ethanol cus ive always done the same burning amount on gas or ethanol.

compression is good across the board nice healthy and even to a T
No leaks anywhere.

what do you think? from inspecting ur engine and head there. did it burn oil before?

seth98esT
09-26-2009, 10:46 AM
If your compression is good, it shouldnt be the piston rings. If you are sitting at a stop light for a bit, then take off, do you get a puff of blue smoke? Usually a sign of bad valve seals.

Could be your headgasker has a leak, which may not affect compression if it isnt around the cylinders. When was the last time you checked your oil after draining?

Might as well start a new thread ;)

But my car didnt noticeably burn any oil. A quart of oil every 100 miles is a sign of something majorly wrong.

crzejkr
09-26-2009, 05:13 PM
it drives great. yea ive checked all the for all the signs. o well. drive it till it dies. that was my moto 2 years ago. lol. still going strong. but im scared lately it feels i dont have the power it had before. im gona have to rush along and buy a core engine and head and have it on the way of rebuilding it.
i might just be parenoid.
most likely its the rings cus of all the high reving. oil dont have time to clear.

but the power loss was due to fouled plugs. cleaned them up n a wire brush and like new.

noticed when i compression cheched em.

i got 190 or so even across the board. what are 2.4 suppose to be running factory spec?

pm the answer, dont want to be thread jacking. and ive forgotten how to start a new post lol.

seth98esT
09-26-2009, 07:01 PM
Not 100% sure on compression, but 210psi rings a bell, I may be off though. I know on a 2.0L it is ~170.

Your using a 98 GST harness? Do you have pictures of the plugs in question? Why not just use your stock harness? When I did a 4g63t swap with 2g ECU, I used the stock harness, only had to run a few wires, move a few on the ECU connectors, and wire up the standard resistor pack/coil pack/power transistor.

Check out mko's link for some diagrams:

set back due to a broken oil cooler gasket.... clang clang and dropped a rocker from an uncharged lifter shortly after due to bad oil pump from the blown bearings. i mean it wnet full dry man. i cut the baffle to fit a 1g flat deep down oil pick up tube... it sucked and spit out every drop of oil. next week redo all over again with the gaskets balance shafts and all that other hell again.

AND I FEEL YOU ABOUT THE PILOT BUSHING FOR THE TC. wow on this new motor it didnt come out at all. i ended up cutting it flush with the crank after failing for 3 hours and trying everything. lol new option for you guys.

I got my lifters in yesterday, they look very nice. The oiling hole is huge compared to the old lifters.

Was going to finish assembling the head yesterday but when I went to clean the rocker arms, they seemed real gritty when rolling them. Any tips on cleaning them? I looked into buying new rocker arms, but they are expensive. Evo rocker arms supposedly fit and are lighter, but go for about $150/set, which is more then I want to pay.

Probably going to soak them in some carb cleaner and see how they turn out. A few of them are really gunked up.

Yes sir. Looking into CTS-V calipers. Found them for $94 a caliper online, refurb GSX calipers are $85 without cores. I read that the CTS-V calipers will bolt up to the stock knuckle and you can run the 13" Ford Cobra rotors with hubcentric ring. I have a few PMs out to DSMTuners who have the CTS-V calipers with brackets and 14" rotors, we will see what they say.

Can anyone(mko, John, ect) tell me the spacing between the stock caliper bracket mounts on our knuckles?

I was told this about the CTS-V claipers:
"The mount holes are exactly 4.6" apart. I used a digital micro meter. They bolt up but I'm pretty sure you gotta use a 14" rotor to be used effectively."

Confirmed. CTS-V calipers are direct bolt on to our hub, you just need a 13" rotor with correct offset, bore, and thickness. Now searching for some rotor info. Was going to look at Ford Cobra 13" rotors, but they are only 28mm thick and you would have to use spacers on the pads. The CTS-V calipers require a 32mm thick rotor.

Also order new 5-lug hubs and SS lines. Saweeeeet.

Also, next on the agenda of discussion is wheel fitment.

Evo wheels are 17x8 38 offset correct? How much would 17x8 32 offset wheels stick out? Would it look bad with rolled fenders? I do not want sunken wheels, they NEED to be flush or slight poke.

I would have, but Gm is on backorder for all CTS-V calipers for a few months. I am thinking of buying a used Baer BBK from a guy for now. I may snag up some CTS-V calipers once they come in stock.

Today I got my 5-lug hubs and my rocker arms from b19wheels. Should be getting my oil pump tomorrow, and my JNZTuning order as soon as they decide to ship it haha. Going to drop off some parts for powdercoat this weekend.

Next week my wheels and tires will be here, but I will be out of town all week on business :/

So the following week, I will get a lot done on the car finally.

Winter slut for now, hopefully running by the end of the month. Then just a fun car in the spring. May do a few auto crosses, but having the BMW, it is much funner to autocross!

Also got a deal on a full Energy susp bushing kit, $65 shipped!

Evo VIII MR BBS wheels and some cheap Kumho Ecsta ASX 235/40/17 tires. Cheap all seasons, but they got good snow ratings. Probably will replace them with some summer stickies after winter.

Got my tires, hubs, and oil pump. Bled my new lifters, installed my rocker arms, and cams. Put a bunch of stuff in a box to go out to powder coat. Also pushed the Galant into the garage :)

Some parts:

A couple parts back from powdercoat. Still waiting on valve cover and calipers.

Got a little work done today. Bought all new control arms as my ball joints were questionable, got my front suspension back on. Started to modify one of the rear disc backing plates to accept the stock e-brake cable and had to go help a friend tow a truck.

Should be a roller in the next few days.

mko, you ever figure out the best way to get - camber up front? Does the ingalls ball joint kit allow - camber?

mko
02-27-2011, 10:42 PM
yes the balljoint kit allows positive and negative camber and in my opinion is a much better setup than those sliding camber kits. They get noisy and annoying after some time

I agree. Get the ball joints. the bushings in the sliding ones suck. not to mention pushing the whole arm out causes the arm to rub in your fenderwell. Also the solid steel offset bushing ones suck as weel because they can work their way out of alignment and the outer polyurethane jacket is so thing it will degrade and allow the steel to slop all around.

I've had every kit you can think of. get the spc balljoints for the front, or the spc control arms.

Seth you needs less cute as a button wittle rear bweaks.

Got the front case on, water pump, timing set, I am just worried about my rod bolts being stretched. I am going to take off my rod caps and measure the bolts and see I can see any signs of stretchage. I have a set of ARP rod bolts, but would require a dismantle and another trip to the machine shop :/
