..............but its almost Spring, but a project is a project none the less.

I dont even know where to begin, I have so many "miny" projects going on, im just gonna post up the major ones for now and add pics as I go

switched up my turbo setup a bit, same turbo, new manifold, downpipe, intercooler and intercooler pipes

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/HPIM6156.jpg

yes the radiator upper outlet is only 3" from the wastegate...thats a problem

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/HPIM6157.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/HPIM6155.jpg

the downpipe is 2.5" coming off the turbo and it makes a crazy bend, then it opens up to 3"
this is the only pic for now, as I am waiting for my Vband flanges to come in, so all work has been halted on the downpipe.

creative thinking.......radiator hose problem solved

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Winter08003.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Winter08002.jpg

test fit of what soon will be my new upper intercooler pipe, 3" aluminum
the silicone connector wont be in the middle, it will be TIG welded right there.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Winter08004.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Winter08001.jpg

Well thats all the pics for now, im hoping to make some progress on getting the intercooler mounted
this week and finishing the downpipe and wastegate dump. Once thats all done my tranny needs to come
out and get the LSD sent back to Quaife so they can fix it, then I can move on to finally install my Energy Suspenion
complete suspension bushing kit and my Megan Coilovers, after thats done I am installing my twin walbro 255 fuel pump setup and finally when all that is done I can install my Brembo calipers/rotors and new wheels. Ohh did I mention I still have to install the JDM rear bumper, grille and sideskirts? and get the car painted? It never ends...........

screw energy suspension, its too damn soft.

LOL

Nah thats not til november. I got energy suspensions kit a long time ago but just never installed it. I bought the pro-thane motor mount kit and I wasnt that impressed, their front mount was gay so I had to use energy suspensions and their rear mount didnt even fit.

yea the front prothane mount is machined too large and bounces around... according to some it can even break the bolt after a while...i used all 3 except the front and it stiffened up a lot, i havent yet but i will be ordering a deyeme (sp?) front mount

that u bend looks familiar. Is that a SBR mani also? i have one sitting around that I considered using. looks like a quality manifold.

does this mean you wont be coming in a galant again for the annual BBQ?

That bend looks very familiar, your setup actually inspired me. I exhausted all options to finally decide that bend was the only choice. Did anyone notice the A/c compressor is bolted back up? Thats right, A/C is going back into the car. Thats the main reason that bend is soo tight. The manifold is actually made by HAFE Performance, its made of cast Stainless Steel and overall its a good manifold and very durable. I have one of them bling bling polished SS heat shields for it too thats not in the pics. In terms of the BBQ, I am doing my absolute best to make sure the car is there. Especially since I havent had the 8g at any of the BBQ's for the past 3 years although I did bring the 7g to one of them.

I had two 1" wide by 3" tall by 1/4" thick aluminum brackets welded vertically on the top of the intercooler. I drilled holes in these brackets, drilled holes in the back of the top floor on the crash bar and used a nut and bolt.

I plan on doing the same thing with this new setup

ok so I got home a little early from work today and I was able to finish the downpipe. I thought this was going to be a lot harder than it turned out to be, the key to doing this sort of thing is having plenty of extra piping because you WILL make a mistake and be patient...and dont weld with a cotton hoodie like me because that ish got burned

Ok so I have been doing some work over the passed week....

intercooler mocked up in place, trying to get a general idea of where I was going to place it and how I was going to mount it.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08011.jpg

as you can see, I cut the center lock support and cut out the area where the bolt to hold in the power steering cooler went. I havent ran a power steering cooler in 3 years and it still works fine. The only reason to get one is if you do autox or road racing and you can mount it elsewhere.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08003.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08008.jpg

had 3 tabs tig welded to the intercooler. The mounting hole for the center tab is already some type of hole in the center lock support a few inches below the bottom bolt on the hood latch, all I did was drill the hole slightly bigger.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08007.jpg

this is how I did the side tabs. I drilled large holes in the front of the crash bar, then smaller holes in the back layer of the crash bar. This way the bolts are inside the bar and wont stick out against the plastic bumper, I used washers between the tabs on the intercooler and the backside of the crash bar in order to "shim" the intercooler so it didnt sit crooked. Its hard to do without this because the crash bar is curved.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08016.jpg

Ther intercooler is as far back as I can get it. The bumper fits better than I expected. I only have to trim a little bit on the backside of the bumper about 1/4" off the lower vent hold thats at the very bottom of the bumper on each side. I will also have to trim a litte off the center opening near the inlet/outlet of the intercooler because I need space for the silicone connectors and clamps

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08002.jpg

Done.

looking good man. the only thing that i see a problem with is that upper rad hose. will it have enough give to move with the motor? just thinking having a solid hose would create some problem with the motor moving when you get on and off the gas.

Stewi
04-03-2008, 05:16 AM
Yeah I considered that when I made it. For that reason, the end of the hard pipe that connects to the water neck on the head will be about 3" away from the neck and there will be a silicone connector there, that will give it enough flex. My motor also doesnt move around that much as I am running solid urethane motor mounts all around.

ok so here are the pics from today. I was able to cut and fit all the intercooler pipes, I trimmed the front bumper so that it clears the intercooler, I finished the wastegate dump tube and radiator hose. I am going to have all the stuff welded up this week. Next week is suspension, weekend after is fuel system, then finish the body work and paint.

The intercooler pipes themselves were fairly easy to get setup. I only have 5 welds total for the intercooler pipes. I for the upper pipe, one for the hotside pipe, one for the BOV and one for the Intake Air Temp sensor (for AEM EMS). getting this setup was alot easier than I originally anticipated.

Okay so my pipes are all welded up and looking good. No pics of them yet as I want to get them hot tanked to get any little bits of aluminum dust/shavings out from cutting them and once they are cleaned im gonna polish them up real nice. All my fuel system components have finally come in and my custom feed fitting was made by the local hose shop. Due to the design of our sending unit there is no real way to get a AN fitting for the feed line on the sending unit itself, so what I did was cut off the hard line connector under the car right before the tank where it meets the rubber line. I took the hardline piece from my parts car. By doing this you retain your factory hardline in case you ever want to go back to a stock like fuel system and you also retain the factory connection on the feed line. I had a -6 AN brazed onto the hardline so the -6 will run all the way to the inline pump which will be mounted behind the main cross member, then the outlet on the inline pump is a -8 which goes into an inline filter which then goes into a 4 or 5 foot section of -8 hose then into the fuel rail.

The return line is a bit tricky. Mitsu designed this sending unit and return line the way they did for a very specific reason. I havent completely decided how im going to do the return line, I have a really good idea as you can see I already have a -6 AN return line fitting on the sending unit which was easier than I thought, but their might be a bigger picture here that im missing, so I wont really know the deal until I get this thing running and I can see my fuel pressure coming back to the tank and decide if my idea will work or not. Anyhow, here are a few pics of the parts and such. Im going to install the feed and inline pump this afternoon, more pics to follow.

fuel system installed today....

unplugged hose to stock hardline and hooked up my hardline with the AN fitting

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08030.jpg

ran some -6AN line up to the inline pump....

inline pump and filter installed

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08028.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08029.jpg

ran -8 line out of the filter and up to the rail rail, there is just enough space to go up thru the gap between the crossmember and the firewall, this way the line is no where near the downpipe. Something about a 1200 degree pipe and a gas line coming in contact makes me uneasy.

okay so all day today I was thinking to myself "I gotta stop at the speed shop on the way home and get a straight -8 fitting for my fuel feed line because the 90 isnt cutting it." So I do just that, then I get home and get totally side tracked and I end up relocating my oil cooler and some other work. I am just glad I got the oil cooler to fit in a location that will get decent airflow, the last thing I wanted was to tuck it out of the way and run another fan, another relay and more wiring. I HATE WIRING! So the other work I was referring to was the A/C, thats right, A/C is BACK! No more sweating my balls off on a 102 degree humid July day.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08037.jpg

tweaked the line a little bit to clear the back of the JDM headlight. I totally lucked out as my parts car was hit in the right front but all the A/C stuff I needed was fine. For now I just got it all in place but im gonna take it all apart again and paint the silver lines black so they blend in and im gonna replace all the o-rings so im not leaking R134 all over my nice parts.

ok so I havent gotten alot accomplished in the past week because im waiting for my quaife LSD to be fixed and sent back. Its been a month since I contacted them about the problem, it took 3 weeks to get a return authorization from them, needless to say I am pretty pissed about that whole situation.

In the meantime, I have come to the realization that im not a big fan of the place I mounted my inline pump. Now I dont drive my 8g every day like I used to, but even still, god forbid I hit anything in the road and it takes out the pump, im either gonna lose the motor from leaning out or catch the car on fire. I spent the entire day yesterday trying to figure out where I could move this thing to. The easiest solution was the engine bay, but NHRA rules say you cant have an electric pump in the engine compartment unless its a tube chassis race car, and I dont want to get screwed when I go to the track. So this is what I did....

I removed the bracket that holds the e-brake cable to the underbody of the car and used washers to space the pump bracket away from the body so that I had clearance for the fittings. I am going to just use a zip tie and support the e-brake cable on something else.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08042.jpg

filter and stuff is close to where it was before....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08039.jpg

oil cooler is fully mounted and I modified the hoses to reach the new location

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08038.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08041.jpg

I also re-sealed the oil pan so hopefully (fingers crossed) no more oil seepage.

tomorrow im gonna change all the a/c o-rings and permanently mount all the lines

next I gotta do some sanding on the bumper to clean up where I cut to fit the intercooler

new flywheel will be here tomorrow, new clutch next week and hopefully my LSD will be back too, if quaife stops sucking and fixes it.

What kind of sealant are you using? I used high temprature RTV...

I tried using the quick-set RTV and it leaked like a sive, I guess the RTV was quicker than me!

Stewi
05-05-2008, 06:40 AM
I used ultra gray RTV. The high temp RTV is the stuff thats cooper colored, thats meant for high temp seals like ghetto rigging a head gasket, or exhaust gaskets and the like. You can even use it on the threads of o2 sensors if the sealing ring leaks. The trick to using ultra gray is after you apply it to the pan, wait about 15 minutes before you put the pan on, this gives it time to start getting tacky so it doesnt squeeze out all over the place when you tighten the bolts.

seth98esT
05-05-2008, 10:02 AM
Ive always had problems with only pan seepage. I used the Ultra grey stuff last time and still had problems. I probably needed a new pan. Nice progress so far man.

OK update........

So I talked to quaife today and they said my LSD will be repaired and ready for shipping either tomorrow or friday. This is good news, so that means I should have a working tranny by the following weekend.

I was also able to get my lower control arms off today and press out the busted up stock ball joints. Let me tell you, I would rather get gas and oil spilled on my face, eyes and hair than get ball joint/axle grease on any part of my body. I got it all over my hands and arms from taking the ball joints out, that stuff smells like ass and it doesnt clean off because its sooo thick. Now that im done venting.... im going to bed....

Okay so last night I was feeling a better, it was about 7pm and I figured, wtf, why not try and put my tranny back in the car. So I get the other tranny out very quickly as it only had two bolts holding it in and there is no clutch or flywheel on the motor, so it slides right off. I put the 5 speed pilot bushing into the crank, so far so good, put on those factory 3g "spacers" for the flywheel and bolt up my brand new 3g fidanza flywheel. Fidanza sent it to me with their own hardware and advised to use their hardware as the stock 3g 5 speed bolts wont work. So I compared and they are right, the stock bolts are too short as the fidanza is thicker than the stock flywheel. So I use the fidanza bolts, im slowly torquing them in a criss cross pattern, as I go to torque one of the bolts, the motor spins over, WTF? Yeah thats right, the bolt is bottomed out in the crank, yay fidanza for sending me bolts that are too long. So now its 8pm and I dont have the right bolts and the car is in the dirveway. So I put the crossmember back in the car and used a 4x4 from the crossmember to the pan to support the motor and pushed her back into the garage. Whats ghay is I had every intention of driving it on sunday, now im gonna order the bolts from mitsu today and I wont get them til monday, so yet again.....I wait.....

Grade 10.9 hardened steel. I would probably ruin a cutting wheel/blade for each bolt, plus run the risk of screwing it up.

New fidanza flywheel, ACT 6 puck clutch and tranny with my fixed LSD are finally back into the car as of sunday night.

So I got a little bit more done today. Let me tell you, I normally work 7am-3pm but my buddy is on his honeymoon so I have to cover his shift which is 10-6:30 and it SUCKS. By the time I get home with the traffic its like 8pm. This is really screwing me up with the car because by time I get home its starting to get dark, I can only do under hood stuff in the garage because of how cluttered it is, I still need to get the car in the air so I can run the wires to the inline pump and secure the hoses under the car. I also need to get there rear disc setup on the right rear, for now I have 3 wheel disc brakes....lol

So tonight I got the manifold, turbo, wastegate adapter, oil drain, hot side intercooler pipe 1 piece of the 3 piece downpipe back into the car. Im slowly chipping away at it. Tomorrow I plan to at least get the wiring done for the fuel pump and then get the rest of the downpipe back into place as well as the wastegate & dump tube and possibly even the intercooler pipes.

I am gonna be busting my @$$ for the next two weeks in effort to get this thing to the TGCNY meet and back home under its own power and not needing the help from a flatbed.

Okay the wastegte, dump tube and exhaust are done, the secondary fuel pump is almost completely wired up, all the fittings and lines are now installed, and mounted/supported.

Tommorow I get home regular time so im hoping to get the rear disc swap, rear sway bar and rear coilovers installed. That will leave me saturday afternoon to get the front suspension and intercooler pipes in place and get this biatch running.

Okay, so I got alot of stuff done last night and today.

Intercooler pipes are all back in and clamped down, all wiring is tucked as best it can be for now, I got that big wire loom that normally goes on the intake manifold tucked, so thats cool. Installed the rear sway bar, new bushings and endlinks. Installed the megan coilovers, bled the clutch, installed the EVO throttle cable. I re-routed the oil cooler lines and oil feed line, got them secured into place. I also adjusted and installed my new front swaybar end links.

I would have been able to start it tonight, but I was trying to install the -4AN fitting on the oil feed and when I was tightening the hose end fitting, the barb snapped right off, I hate assembling the small fittings, they are soo fragile. So I cant get another one til tomorrow after work. Once I finish that line, all I gotta do is fill her up with gas, oil and tranny gear oil and I can fire her up.

Man its looking real good under there i cant wait for the "It's running now" post lol

just a thought... have you given any thought to getting an aluminum radiator? like a CBRD or something else that will put the upper neck closer to the driver side head light? so you can use a straight radiator hose.

Yeah I actually have, and its still something I want to do for the future, that upper radiator hard pipe cost me about $40 to make. Towards the end of this build money started getting a little tight due to my wedding coming along in 6 months which me and the wife are paying for ourselves. The CBRD appears to be very much like the Koyo EVO5 radiator, I know guys with top mount manifolds were using them because of the upper inlet location being offset. At some point I will contact Koyo or CBRD and buy just a core w/tanks on it but without any mounting tabs, this way I can mock up my own and tig them on in the right place, the last thing I wanna do is start cutting and grinding a new radiator, besides aluminum grinds down like SHIT.

So far so good. Car is running well, working out little bugs as I go, but overall, everything is good. I am working on getting a Koyo EVO5 radiator in the car next week just in time for the drive down to the Mid Atlantic Meet

Ok so I have still been working out some bugs. Not really difficult bugs, but moreso problems with bolts rattling themselves loose and shit falling out/off. So alot of stuff in the engine bay has been loctited for safety since this thing vibrates the balls off the car because of the solid motor mounts and no balance shafts.

I was able to get the EVO5 radiator a few weeks ago and get it fit right and hooked up. I finally decided to get some pics of it today. If you look in one of the pics from the bottom, you can see where I cut and grinded the old tab off and relocated it and had it TIG'd on.

Very clean. Radiator has a nice straight angle for the upper pipe now. Numbers! We need them!
