I am biting this idea off Seth  from his new green 7g build thread. I just thought it would be cool to have a thread for anyone that is interested to go to and see how -G-rim went from a normal everyday looking stock Galant to what it is currently. Build threads are fun to read and look at and its like a autobiography for those that may be interested and for me to look back at its humble beginnings.

ALL my modifications to the car will be posted here with pics.

Enjoy.

After about 7 months I started to modify the car transferring some parts I was able to salvage from my 95 Galant. Did the 97-98 front end conversion with my first fabricated front lip. Installed the Skunk2 coilovers with the KYB AGX's and stiff bars. Painted the "LS/GS" wheels bronze and installed my "K-spec" black housing headlights

The BIG change where I kept on the DL for awhile. I had gathered all the parts I needed to turbo -G-rim and took a weeks vacation to do the install. Did the installation in my fiance's brothers garage myself with the only exception for the I/C piping which my friend teached me how to weld the piping and the exhaust was done at a shop

Installed the JDM VR4 spoiler first and slapped on the 18x7.5 Racing Hart C2's on the rear wheels

Very early the morning before I started tearing down the car I had majority of the back end of the exhaust done with 3" piping all the way to the end of the catylitic converter. I had to cut off where they welded so I could remove the OEM header and cat converter. It wasn't fun at all due to the small space I had to work with and going through 2 cutting wheels. Since alot of the bolts and studs were severely rusted it was useless to remove sections of the front exhaust.

The car was basically ready..all it needed was I/C piping and the exhaust done. Towed the car to my friends house to get the I/C piping made and installed. It took 2 days mostly because the couplers didn't come in on time and some of the piping we needed we couldn't get till next day

I/C piping finally done...so it time to finish the rest of the exhaust. 3" piping all the way from the downpipe to the muffler. I had to get a custom 3 inch flange made so I could bolt the back half of the exhaust to the end of the downpipe. I didn't want it welded just in case I needed to remove the downpipe completely

The big engine build was postponed because my GVR4 was my daily and the clutch went out and some other things so I had to get -G-rim running again. I put the old motor back in and freshened it up with new seals, pulley's and timing belt so I can have it running again

Dude you are really making it hard for me to let go of my GS, everytime you and DOHC do these type of brief history things you guys make me want to do so many things in such llittle time, your guys are the ones that have kept me into my car all this time showing me the potential of my GS. I have been thinking about whats my next move and for some reason i dont want to get rid of my Galant due to so many memories but at the same time its time for me to move on into something bigger. Well man good luck with your process and keep up the good work, I love your ride man.

Thank you for the comments...but I would also like to thank those that continue to do what they do with their Galants, keeps me motivated in a way. Took some better pics of the car since I found our digital camera. I am looking to install the suspension stuff this week...latest next week. Planning on doing a top engine clean (intake manifold, runners, and combustion chamber) to clean up the carbon build up. I will take pics when I do that...I am curious how much white smoke will shoot out this time?

Not sure...depends I guess what you want to do with it. Performance wise...probably 96-98 since if you plan to go DOHC or coil type ignition its a relatively "easy" mod to accomodate.

If you are blessed like DOHCstnr and Joaltava and own a "GS".

If you are looking to go with the JDM theme...then 94-96 only because of the rear tails, to which the JDM's bolt up with no problem while the 97-98's require you to switch out the trunk lid for 94-96. Also the 94-96 have the "T" header bar already to work for the JDM front bumpers...the 97-98 were only USDM issue so you would have to use the 94-96.

Really depends what you want to do.

im going for the JDM look. im leaving the 6g for the proformance part. my 7 and 8g will just be mainly looks. plus the wife will be driving the 7g, so cant really do to much mods. so for the JDM way a 94-96 you said? is you front bumper JDM or a 97-98? i want a JDM look but ive notice only one style for the front bumper and i really dont like the round fogs they come with, are there others style?

Sooo....yah, I feel like a dumbass and feel bad that I didn't attend to replacing parts that couldn't of resulted in more of a catostraphic damage.

When I got the car running again several months ago and pretty much refreshed up the motor with new seals, belts and pulleys..I seemed to miss replacing the spark plugs which I SHOULD of. One reason is because when I initally got the car running..I found out that the 14b oil and water seals took a crap. Ever since I have had a check engine light and I hate to say it...I have been procrastinating on replacing the sensor. I either don't have the time and the car seemed to be running good...so I kept driving it. My MPG weren't as good as previously before I garaged the car...about 5mpg less average, but I thought it was the result of a bad O2 sensor.

I had a no power to fuel pump issue for several weeks and I got it running again this past weekend. I decided Sea Foam the car to get carbon buildup cleaned up. I knew the spark plugs would need replacing..so my intention was to replace them after I sea foamed the car. I applied Sea foam on Tuesday night , but had to work the whole day on Wednesday. So I drove the work and figured it would be good so I could blast out a good amount of carbon buildup out.

Well that night one of my co-workers wanted to mess around with me on our way home. It was 12 at night and a good portion of the highway didn't have any cars..so he wanted to see what my car was all about. He had nothing special..a stock 2005 Honda Accord 4cyl. He gunned it..but the Galant didn't break a sweat passing him and continued to till I got to 110mph and slowed down till he caught up. He called me up and went on his way and I went the speed limit the rest of the way home. I noticed though the car was running a bit rough and wen decleration to my exit the car backfired a bit. Then I noticed the car would "flutter" at around 4000rpms, so I babied the car the rest of the way home.

It was late and I had to work again this morning, but it was a short day and got off around noon. I took my fiance's Endeavor to work since she was off today and left -G-rim home. This is what I got to enjoy to see:

I needed to change the spark plugs anyways after the Sea Foam and it was about that time to replace them anways. New NGK's gapped for the turbo setup
http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/59/p5170431hs1.jpg

Pulled out the ones and found out why "she's spitting"(Tokyo Drift movie quote there:cool:)
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/6934/p5170430gv0.jpg

Looks like a severe sign of preignition probably due to carbon buildup and the prolong continued operation of a bad O2 sensor. The spark plugs are in order of cylinder..far left is Cylinder 1 and the farthest right is cylinder 4. Cylinder one was the only one with the nose still intact.
http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/562/p5170432fq1.jpg

I have to few things to look at, but now the car has new spark plugs and took it out for a spin and its definitely more alive.

Its good to have a good stock of spark plugs junst in case:cool:

I just checked compression on all cylinders for the heck of it and 200 all across the board.

IDK either man...I was just shocked and speechless when I pulled the plugs. I have WOT many times between when I got the car running again till last night.

I am going to check the plugs again on my next oil change and see if the thing happens again with the plugs..then I will have another issue to look into. I am going to replace the O2 sensor this weekend also....unfortunately this is what has to get me to change it.

The plugs got me paranoid..this is why I did a compression test after I took the car out for a spin after I put the new plugs in. Engine response is much much quicker..and builds boost very quick. With new plugs and Sea Foam I am guessing that is the outcome.

Like I said I was still paranoid after driving the car...so I let it cool down and did a compression test. A sigh of relief when it registered 200 across the board, but still going to see the results of a long term test.

-G-rim sure did fool me prior to me feeling the effects of the foul plugs. My co-worker was asking me all these questions on what I did to the car this morning at work. He was surprised how fast it accerlated. The funny thing is that he was on the floor with the gas, but the highest I registered on my throttle position on the SAFC was 80% and thats because I was babying the clutch because is slips at around 5000rpms in 4th and 5th gear. He was speechless that I was only 80% throttle and he was flooring it and -G-rim caught up, passed, and kept on going w/o "breaking a sweat".

My last shifter bezle had a broken tab that was suppose to hold it down and one day it wasn't holding the bezel down and I was having a very rough day. I got pissed and took out some of my frustration trying to bang the bezel to stay down and it broke in several pieces. I finally got a chance to find one and replace my shifter bezel with one that finally stays down:cool:

Here how I was driving the car for about 2 months with no shifter bezel or boot.

I have been bitten by the Audi R8 "LED" setup and ever since I have been conjuring the idea of getting a similar "look" on my Galant. I have been spending the past couple of months researching different LED's for brightness, measurements, quality, and price. I bought 2 sets of LED's and the first set wasn't exactly what I expected and started fitting that set on the Endeavor. My 2nd set which I recieved today was surprising exactly what I expected.

Worked out perfectly since I had to replace my O2 sensor and install my new MBC. Here are some install pics of the LED's and my new manual boost controller.

Removed the front bumper so I can hide my custom harness for the LED's

Well its been awhile since I posted any type of progress to -G-rim and honestly...not too much I have done to the car lately. I am mostly gathering parts here and there for the next big upgrade(s).

Well I wanted to do something to the car as of late. I decided to do some interior changes.

One thing that I never really liked about -G-rim is the 2 toned interior. The bottom portion was a light color and it showed its age and easily shows dirt. I like a really dark interior and found a 7g locally that a guy is parting out and bought the pieces I need to swap to a dark interior.

Here is the original interior before I swapped out pieces.

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/PB050700.jpg

Here is most of the stuff torn down. I also replaced the vent actuator because of the infamous "clicking" from the previous one.

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/PB050705.jpg

I swapped the glove box door lock from the original one to the new glove box

Here are pics after the new pieces were installed.

Got some Nokya hyper yellow bulbs for my highbeams and installed them. Nothing big.
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/PB050711.jpg

I saw pics of a JDM 6g Galant VR4 with the "donut" headrests a few months ago and wanted them bad because they look soo much better than the "breadloaf" headrests. Well after finding out from my JDM source how much they are which were $400 for the pair...I decided HELL NO. My boy who owns a shop owns a couple Starions and he had a pair of leather headrests that matched the interior of my GVR4 and he gave them to me. Well they fit PERFECTLY into the stock GVR4 seats and look 100x's better than the original headrests.
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/PB050702.jpg

Well obviously I got a idea and decided to "try" them on the stock 7g seats. Well, the fit PERFECTLY!! Well I acquired a set of Conquest donut headrests that were in awsome condition. Now I am rocking these headrests and look soo much better:cool:

I was gonna suggest the same thing with the starion seats, and if the seat is ripped, why not get them redone in the leather of your choice. what about 2g or evo seats

I am looking at a few options for new seats. I am just looking for the best deal on the options I have. I am not looking to spend alot since I can't justify spending alot of money on them right now. I am also looking for something that looks somewhat "OEM" in the car...I am not trying to grab attention for people to look inside the car. Evo 8 or 9 Recaros would be sweet..but the going rate for them right now a little much, but you never know...they are worth it. Seats are kinda down in the priority list on what I want to do with the car. I got some other things I want to do first...to make it go faster and handling better. I know seats will be a definite when the car starts seeing course track use...but for now, the OEM seats are doing well for daily driving use.

The "S" (stock) seats are utter garbage compared to the Evo Recaros.....no comparison at all.

The Recaros really and honestly give a car a much more better feel. They are way lighter compared to the stock seats. Seating position definitely gives more driver to car connection.

My arm and hand postion is 100x's more better for the shifter and steering as also my legs and feet for the pedals.

Not to mention these seats look dead sexy in the 7g

Well yesterday my boy Mike who owns a white 7g currently rolling with 19's and just 5 speed swapped, went out to the salvage yard yesterday to pick up a few little things for our 7g's and maybe find something cool. Well we came across a 94 7g I believe and we were taking random parts off it and unknowingly realized something different from its side view mirrors. Denver (Qnzmostwanted) is the only other person that has owned a 7g that had mentioned these mirrors and up till yesterday NEVER seen this part on a 7g. Either he was pulling my leg or this is some super rare USDM 7g part.

Well..the part Denver had on his old 7g was non power folding mirrors. I thought these never existed...till yesterday. Apparently a very tiny milli percent of 7g's in 94 were imported from Japan. Why do I say this..because the 7g we pulled these mirrors off of had a VIN# starting with a J which means it was built in Japan. There were other things about this 7g which would indicate it was "higher quality" since it was built in Japan, like the dash board. The dash was MINT and my boy can vouch for me also. No fading and no seperation of the material in ANY part of the dash...it looked brand spanking new!!

ANYWAYS...these are authentic Non Power JDM folding mirrors for the 7g  8-)

Mirror folded
http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/Grim/P5091114.jpg

The JDM folding mirrors have a different shape than the USDM and actually "flow" better with the 7g's curved body shape.
The mirror is definitely smaller than the USDM mirror assembly...so I would say I lost about 15-20% visual coverage from the USDM mirror was was wider.

The new project is 85% done from its goal....though 95% done for it to actually run on its own power.

Doing something NEVER done on its platform in different areas.

The car is built and setup for dual duty DD and road course action.

Though...the debute and all updated progress will be on Galant Tuners.

The pic i am posting is just a teaser...nothing crazy. Just a small snippet of what i got up my sleeve.

Grim is no more...as the project is now the Night Fury Project.

The inspiration of Grim was no longer proper as I am now raising a son and me personally "growing up". I accomplished great things with Grim...but now the car is going through a new life with big changes and a new purpose. Inspired from one of my sons favorite movies "How to train a Dragon" and personally I like it also...the new name of my 7g is now "Toothless"

This car is built with a dual purpose as a light daily driver and a weekend road course car. I have done alot on replacing the suspension and drivetrain with a massive overhaul even replacing 95% of the drivetrain/suspension bolts with brand new OEM bolts. Thanks to Tuners Nation and BC Racing...for my tailored built coilovers and looking to more involvment with BC Racing as progress into more intense road course events.

I will go into more detail after the car is done..but like I said, I am doing something on this car that has NEVER been done on the 7g platform in many aspects and will break ground for future enthusiasts to 7g.

3 of the only people that truly know that I got up my sleeve know my plans and have pushed me to post a teaser shots of the car. Those who counted me out of the game...BIG mistake, I am like Jordan coming out of retirement.

New fasteners are the shit. Especially the suspension. Makes everything so much easier to work with. Keep us posted Kev. Glad you didn't give your car the axe.

Never intended to axe the car..though there were times the past couple months I did want to. Rear subframe is fairly new..just replaced the mounting bushings/stoppers on it.

The front was a whole different story since the car spent its first years of ownership in up state new york. Rust was my enemy..and almost every single component in the front suspension was infected with rust. With that said..a new front subframe and 90% of the front suspension is brand new or newer with no rust with all new OEM bolts/washers/nuts.

Lets just say my local Mitsubishi dealer know me by name and have created a special spot for me in their warehouse for all the parts I have been ordering.

Haha I know what you mean man. My first GS was a local 1 owner car that stayed garaged. That thing was a dream to work on. The White GS is also from upstate New York(imagine that lol) I literally had to do the same thing you did. There were even bolts I had to saw apart. So when I went prothane, I started with all new bolts and control arms in the front and rear. Between that and snapping turbo bolts... new OEM fasteners are all my car has in the chassis, and on the engine.
So I feel your pain,
and I'll never buy another new york car lol and I'll never drive the GS in salt again.

Glad to know someone feels my pain..but opening the garage and seeing it sit the way it is now was worth all that crap.

In the end..at least I know I did things the right way, and this car deserves it.

luckily the 7g is well sealed and undercoated from the factory. so no body rust. Just had the rusty bolts.

Last teaser pic till the car is done....

http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn133/Galantkid25/Grim/IMAG0364.jpg

GT though has a few more pics:icon_wink:

John...I actually sprayed a new layer of undercoating in the wheel wells and undercarriage after sanding down few minor rust spots. Other than the front subframe and suspension parts with rust..majority of the undercarriage was uneffected. Toothless only spent 2 years in up state NY..so it wasn't exposed too long with salt saturated winter roads.

Looks like brand new non-awd spindles. So that at least for now narrows the list down a bit.
I'm thinking a cage is in the works.
Also noticed the cross member laying under your car so I'm sure you have the motor pulled for one reason or another. Unless that was just for the sub frame install.

I dont want to deal with another AWD vehicle..i already have my GVR4 and now a Montero with a AWD system that is EPIC. I honestly like to drive FWD also...plus the light and nimble characteristics of Toothless is why its soo much fun to drive and i will lose that if i went awd. I am also inspired by the KBR Eclipse, destroying fwd stereotypes and this car isnt built to be a drag car either.

Plus my next awd vehicle is going to be imported in a couple years anyways. ;)

Alot came off in the drivetrain and suspension for the overhaul and upgrades. My body has been sore the past few months doing this...times like this a shop lift would make a world of a difference.

Looks like I can log in again....but just dropping by. Good to see some OG'ers still in the Galant game.

For those that haven't had a chance to see my build thread in the "dark side"...here are a couple pics.

My cousin from the Philippines got the Billet LCA's for me. Buddy of his was closing a race shop and had a couple of these to get rid of. I got them at a dirt cheap price as a result of how far the $1 dollar goes in Philippine currency and plus I didn't have to pay shipping costs as my uncle brought them back with him after visiting there.

I haven't made the fastest progress on this car as I want due to me and my wife having our daughter last year so my time is mostly taken between working and the kids.

I am currently preparing the getting the car ready for a couple NASA events this year in Sebring and Maybe Daytona Speedway.
